I think I'll stick with SP2, thank you very much.

oh what a reliable source...

The Register isn't reliable?

NO, IT'S NOT! The Register is one of the most anti-microsoft "news" sites out there. They posted so much BS about the Windows XP activation system while it was in beta, that it wasn't even funny. Besides, I don't like their lame British sense of humor.

slashdot link to story and commentary. This is disturbing stuff.

Oh yeah. Back up your story from The Register with a link from Slashdot. That will make it MUCH more credible Most stories and comments about Microsoft on Slashdot are about as biased as the Linux comparsion articles on Microsoft's home page. You can't trust either one.

You know, I was thinking that just yesterday, but today I thought I just had to install the latest Promise driver and BIOS update. Figured that might be the problem. Maybe it was a dumb thing to do. Fact is, all this works fine in Win98SE and Windows 2000 SP2, so far that is. But in NT4 SP6a? NO! I can compute maybe 30 seconds to 5 minutes and everything's just fine and then it's as if some demon has invaded my computer. It's like some invisible person is at my keyboard and mouse and real fast all kinds of things open all over the place, dialogs appear and disappear - I tell you, it's bizarre! I thought maybe it was because I didn't have the Intellimouse Explorer driver installed so I installed it and it was the same. In fact, I found out that even without the new Promise Windows NT driver installed, just installing the Intellimouse driver is enough to make this bizarre stuff come on. Thank God for Ghost or I'd be a gibbering idiot right now.
What's wrong with my system?

Well, you just proved that the problem wasn't with the Promise drivers or BIOS then. (Btw, installing the updated Promise Windows' drivers before flashing the BIOS was a good idea, as that is the recommended practice from Promise.)

I am willing to bet that the problem is a hardware fault in the mouse. Contact MS about it, there is a sort of recall/replacement going on for older optical Intellimouse hardware, it can cause machines to lock up or flake out. You may be seeing that happen.

Makes sense. I can't think of another possibility and I'm going to contact MS. I had an MS serial mouse go bad on me and they were very good about getting me another. I think they even cross-shipped. That's a few years ago. This Intellimouse Explorer has given me problems before. I couldn't get it to work in Win98SE without using the USB --> PS2 adaptor, so that's the way I have it set up. At this point, I think I should pursue getting a replacement. Thanks! I may give SP3 another try or just wait a while. One thing's for sure - if I do try SP3 again I'm Ghosting first.

SP3 rocks- get it. Deploy it. Enjoy the greater stability and speed. It actually held me back a little longer from upgrading to XP Pro!

It isn't all that clean. In our networked environment, it has caused network slowdowns on some machines. Some software and hardware seems to react poorly to it. MS already has some unreleased hot fixes for it. Also there are hint of sp4 out there. (Remember Nt service packs?)
