I'm 45 years old, so I don't blame my parents much for the number of times I got burned. This subject ought to receive more press and taught to children in school. The more you're burned, the more likely you are to get skin cancer. You don't become immune to it. Personally, I keep my kids out of the sun for that reason. Use plenty of sun screen when they do get in to swim.
If you're so vain that you just have to get a tan for appearances sake, listen to this. If you're just as vain when you reach your 40s, you'll have quite a mess for a complexion, compared to what you'd have without all those years of sun. If you'll peek at the tan lines of a mature woman, you'll see how blotched and freckled the exposed skin is, compared to the milky smooth skin that's been hidden. Even if you're willing to risk
melanoma, I'd think your vanity would steer you away from sun parched, leathery, mottled skin! :Q
I brought this up with our truck driver about 10 years ago. He's Irish and burns easily. I told him of my concerns about the sun. How I'd been burned so many times in my youth. Got the mega freckling on my back and arms to prove it! He said he enjoys being in the sun, and couldn't stand being indoors on the PC as much as I am. I suggested he at least protect himself more. Bah, no big deal. When it's your turn to die, it's your turn. He says the same thing about being in an accident in his little Honda...
Anyway, he is on leave of absence due to skin cancer. Didn't catch it early enough, and he's VERY lucky to be alive right now. He had radiation and chemo treatments like you wouldn't believe. We're still not sure he's over the hump. The risk is REAL!
