I bought the cable modem, so it's only 30$can/month or 20$US/month

Good price for ~3.2Mbit/128Kbit

Pilotron,

I did not know that Earthlink was a reseller! Argh. Thanks for the info. I take it that you had probs with them?

$50/month Qwest DSL 640k/272k

I know its a bad deal...but I haven't heard good things about any of the other providers in the area.
Qwest is fast and they have good phone support so I've stuck with them. My DSL has gone down for various reasons so phone support is a big issue for me. Although I'd like to hit the 1.0 mbps mark, I can settle for a lower speed with better service quality.

Michael, OMG, yes! It was really great the first month I had it, but after that, my pings in games started to gradually worsen (I'd estimate about 10ms average per week) and bandwidth fell to around half of advertised. Needless to say, I was pissed, and wanted it rectified so I called EarthLink about it, and they said "well it's not our problem, you're going to have to call up GTE (now Verizon)." And GTE said "well you're going to have to consult your ISP, we just provide the gateway connection". But my connection was going through BBN Planet routing, which is owned by GTE. It was a big hassle, and came the end of my 12 month contract, EarthLink still tried to charge me for cancellation ($125). It was really freaky. Anyways, yeah, I just want to warn you about it... if I can help someone keep informed and avoid going through the crap I did, it makes me feel better

40 bucks +- for Comcast@home cable. You couldn't pay me to use dialup again. Well... maybe you could pay me, but it would suck.

I pay 39.95/month for Cox cable. It is 1024/128. I have never at peak times received 1024 down. The most I have gotten steady is about 850. My pings between 5:00-12:00 are 300+ and after 12:00 sit between 80 and 100. The cable company here sux and I wish I wasn't so far from the CO for DSL. It is constant 768/128 and has low pings all the time, it is also 39.95/month.

Pilotron,

Thanks for the advice and sharing your experience. I've been thru crap like that with cable and electric companies before and it isn't fun...especially when you get the bill and it's $125 more than you were expecting.

You'll be happy to know (I'm very happy right now!) that I just ordered my DSL thru Southwestern Bell. $50/mo/free modem(when I cash the $99 rebate check)/no activation fee. Here's the stats (ripped right off their homepage) I went with the one-year agreement to waive the $50 setup fee.

What is included with the $49.95 per month "standalone" Basic DSL offer?

DSL Internet service at a speed of up to 768 Kbps downstream / 128 Kbps upstream.*
Unlimited "instantly available" Internet access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Free dial-up Internet account
One dynamic IP address
One primary email box, two extra email boxes and two extra email aliases
Personal home page account up to 3MB
Technical support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
No installation charge with customer self-install
$99 charge for DSL equipment - DSL modem, Network Interface Card (NIC) and Splitter (if needed)
Service is available with a 1 year term or on a month-by-month basis. A $99 rebate is available with a 1 year term

I should be up and running by the end of the month. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction.

I am in the process of getting ADSL thru Earthlink/Covad. It sucks because they just raise the price to 49.95 and 1 year contract. Still waiting for them to mail me the "self-install" kit with the dsl modem and stuff.

Crossing my fingers...

think of a modem connection for about 40% less money in this way:

This page would take 30 seconds to fully load on standard dialup, whereas it's instant on broadband.

i have cable and believe me, those game reviews require LOADS of bandwidth for the screenshots, not to mention, most hobbyist tech websites have layouts in excess of 150KB... just think how long that'd take to load on your 33.6 or (at best) 48.8k connection :/

For 40% less money, it's nowhere NEAR worth the loss of quality which is nearly 95% of what you have with broadband.

I spend $19.95/mo with @home. I have 4 pc's on the cablemodem and it NEVER slows down.

that reminds me:

I get a constant 8mbps connection downstream and a 2.4mbit connection upstream on my cablemodem.

I listed myself as a T3 on napster cuz I routinely do 200k/s+ uploads

I have friends in the bay area who can do 1.2megaBYTES upstream on their uncapped LanCity cablemodems.

Heh, i wonder what they might use that kind of broadband for at $39.95/mo ;o

hahahahahaha

;P

I'm paying $50 a month for DSL 384k/128k from Pacbell/SBC. the downstream is guaranteed at 384k, but I'm getting the usual 1.5Mb. I'm also on static IP instead of dynamic IP service. (Had it before the PPPoE crap.)
