There's no purpose for anything in our brain beyond supporting the continuation of life.

You could equally well rephrase the question as "what is the function" rather than "what is the purpose" because things that survive the evolutionary process are generally supposed to have survived because they have some function, right? But it does appear that you answered the question in that way already.

Please spell Buddhism correctly.

That being said, one of the ideals that I truly love about the buddhist ideology, is that there is no god. You are your own master, and you achieve the best in life by living without intruding on others.

do not harm
do not steal
do not lie
do not misuse sex
do not imbibe intoxicants

I'd call myself "non-theist". I don't deny or disbelieve. You can't have faith in the non-existence of something that has never been given a shred of evidence in the first place.

In other words, you deny/disbelieve unsupported propositions. Don't be afraid to use the word atheist. It's a rational position.

somewhat non-practicing Catholic. i don't go to church, but i do say grace before meals and believe in a higher power. i'm thankful for my life and family and friends, and my job. i just feel the need to say thanks on a daily basis, even if i don't know who or what it is i'm thanking.

I appreciate and applaud the use of the term non-theist. I rarely encounter someone who self-identifies atheist who isn't argumentative and annoying. Non-theist does a good job of describing his views and also making the point that he doesn't enage in the debate.

Agnosticism. Because Atheism is also a belief. It's the belief that there's no god or deity. Believing in or denying something without definite proof is stupid.

Denying a proposition put forward without evidence is not stupid. If I tell you there is a pink elephant orbiting Pluto, saying "I dunno..We can't prove it either way. I'm agnostic." is the epitome of stupid. No evidence = no belief.

But you actually COULD prove/disprove a pink elephant in orbit around pluto.

Do you hold the same opinion of the non-corporeal tri-unicorn which follows you everywhere?
Rumor has it that he serves non-corporeal tea from Russel's Teapot.

No gods, no deities. We conjured them out of our overactive imaginations, just as many fiction and fable writers have done throughout the eons, about a variety of subjects.

Are there more advanced life forms in the universe? I'd say it's quite likely that there are. Might they influence us in some way? Maybe, but very doubtful. Either way, they're still not gods, no more than we are gods of bacteria or fungi, even though we routinely determine their lifespans, and even their course of evolution. Yeast could always think that we have a higher purpose in mind for it, and indeed we do: It's usually sifted, all-purpose, and often bleached. Then, once the yeast has enjoyed a feast, it's a massive slaughter - all for a nice loaf of bread. But again, we're still not gods - we just want a nice localized source of carbon dioxide, with a hint of alcohol.

Agnostic; I'm just plain unsure. Die-hard atheists seem cold and close-minded to me, while religious fundamentalists just seem stupid.

Very interesting, could you elaborate.
Thanks

good summary from wikipedia
Deism:
* Rejection of all religions based on books that claim to contain the revealed word of God.
* God exists, created and governs the universe.
* God gave humans the ability to reason.
* God wants human beings to behave morally.

From Wiki:

Agnosticism is the view that the truth value of certain claims—especially claims about the existence or non-existence of any deity, but also other religious and metaphysical claims—is unknown or unknowable.[1]

Atheism is commonly defined as the position that there are no deities.[1] It can also mean the rejection of belief in the existence of deities.[2] A broader definition is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist.[3]

Depending on which definition of Atheism you subscribe to, you will approach this differently. Agnosticism is the recognition of all possibilities and the unknown. Atheists reject the possibility of a deity, in the same way that the Religious rejects the possibility of the absence of deities.

Actually, the broader definition of Atheism is more like Agnosticism.

There was a time when I considered myself a deist. This may or may not apply to you though... It was before I had seriously considered why I held my "religious" world view. Looking back, I never really believed in a god, not even as a little kid. My deism was an attempt to reconcile the obvious non-existence of a god with society's insistence that a diety did exist.

Agnostic is not a "middle way" between theism and atheism. It deals with the question of knowledge. The fact is we are all agnostic (without knowledge). Those who claim certain knowledge on either side are delusional. The word says nothing at all about your belief. It deals with a completely different question. If you are "unsure", but don't currently believe in a deity or religion, that makes you an atheist whether you like it or not.

This is actually what I would consider agnostic, though I guess depending on who you ask, the line gets blurry.
