Basically, Madonion's idea that everybody is using 1024x768 with 32-bit colour is a little hard to believe.
So out of curiosity, what resolution and colour do you use?

Myself, without any more power, my TNT2 (clocked at 180MHz core, 200MHz mem) can handle comfortably 800x600 with 16 bit colour quite well. I dont go higher because I want the speed, visual quality can wait a while.

EDIT: Added extra poll option (greater than 1280x1024 <- for that you guys are just miles ahead). Poll link

It depends on what game, what OS you happen to be in, etc. =) Usually AT LEAST 1024, up to 1600x1200.

I use 1024x768 for games because my voodoo 3 3000 can't handle 1280x1024. I don't use 1280x960 because my monitor looks bad with it.

I have a Voodoo5/TBird 800. I always play at 1024x768x32, I just use FSAA often.

it just depends on the game, also the load level of the map etc.
I use 1280x1024 16 or 32 bit the most. p3-800, voodoo5
on some games i run 1600x1200 16 bit
on some games 1024x768 16 or 32 bit

jad, you are really getting annoying. Just because YOU cant manage the simple task of getting a video card to work doesn't mean everyone has that problem. Instead of posting this crap, why don't you try and ask for help and find out what you have set up wrong? You don't need to be trolling your anti-Radeon crap on every thread on this board. Do you find it at all odd those games YOU cant get to work are just fine on other peoples machines? Give it a rest already!

BTW, I play 1024 x 768 x 32 on TONS of games that I somehow miraculously get to work on my Radeon. The other 4 systems I've built with them all work just as well.

I'm curious as to what your anti-Radeon post had to do with this poll? I don't see the relevance. BTW, I downloaded the demo's of those games to try and help you diagnose the problem you were having right? BTW, I'm not "old man Radeon". I have 3 systems. One with an ATI card, one 3dfx, and one nVidia. I have jumped on the cases of 3dfx basher trolls as well. If you don't like a product, that is fine. It doesn't mean you need to go into every thread and troll on about it, does it?

Good luck with the new card. I hope it works out well for you.

Well, with my Radeon64, I play UT in 32-bit at 1600x1200 and I do it at 65fps, so I'd say that I am pretty glad that my game loads "at all". My friend has an Ultra and he gets killer framerates but is blown away by the image quality and performance whenever he sees my system in action during gameplay, and I ain't talkin' 2D, either. BTW, Oldfart, you took the words right out of my mouth; glad to see someone talking some sense around here.

That depends entirely what game I'm running:

Quake 3, Unreal, UT: 640 x 480 x 32.
GLQuake, Quake 2, MS Combat Flight Simulator 2: 1024 x 768 x 32.

Damn Busta, I get 10 fps less than you, you tweak and overclock? What's your processor?

BTW, I think you should've made a above 1280 or something, some people do play at 1600.

Back in the old days 640x480 for Quake/QW all the way. Found it hard to adjust to the new resolutions, but with the power out there why not play in all the glory . These days its 1024x768x32 for me.

I find that 960x720x32 is a good compromise between performance and good looks for most games on my GeForce2 MX.

I'm going to pick up a Hercules 3d Propet Pro for my main machine soon, and that should mean comfortable gaming at 1152x864x32 for most games.

For those who don't already know: if you want access to 960x720 as a standard resolution, the easiest way to do it is to use hztool, which also allows easy control over refresh rates.

that's a toughie

1024x768 is my favorite overall resolution

on the 5500, i'll use 16-bit for Q1, Q2, Q3 and UT (glide-LAN), 16-bit on NFS Porsche (w/4xFSAA of course!), 16-bit in Revolt, SB2001 (4xFSAA), Deux Ex

I'll use 32-bit for UT (single player w/compressed tex in D3D), 32-bit for MDK2, and....well, still gotta grab some new games

with GTS Pro, I use 32-bit in just about everything except Q3, in which case I bump up to 1280x1024 and use 16-bit color, or even 1600x1200x16 (for better railgun'ning) with a bunch of detail turned off

My Radeon pulls 75fps in Q3 at 1024X768, which I run most games at. I can go higher, but there's really no point. I still see as many jagged lines at 1024X768 as I do in 1600X1024. The 50% frame drop isn't worth the small quality increase. HRAA is the answer, but there is no way in hell I'm shelling out $600 for a Geforce3. 1024X768 Quincunx would rock!

Oh yeah! I play in 32-bit color. You probably figured that out already though, since I do have a Radeon (which I love).

I just use 640x480 mainly cuz I don't care about the really tiny details - I want the speed. That changes a little bit when I'm in a sniper-type mood.

I run everything in 2Xfsaa on my geforce 2 32mb, so that means 1024X in 16bit, 800X in 32bit color. I usually have to turn fsaa off for Unreal engine games though, Clive Barkers undying wouldn't take it in 32bit, and 16 bit looked like crap--even if the fsaa was sharp and smooth.
