Right now I work from home, so I can do basically whatever I want as long as I'm available for meetings. Before this I was working five eight hour days. My new position is apparently a 9/80 schedule (4x9 + 1x8 followed by 4x9 and a Friday off), which doesn't sound terribly appealing. I've done it before and that extra hour really makes any hope of doing stuff after work fade away. I'd almost rather do four ten hour days.

So what about you? Which schedule fits you best?

Most of my life, I worked 6-10's or more. (often, the 10 hour day stretched to 12 or 14)

HOWEVER, that presumes I'd be getting paid overtime the way I used to be...1.5x after 8, 2x after 10, and 1.5x for the first 8 on Saturday, 2x after that.

The only salaried job I ever had outside the USMC, my normal work day was 7-5 with a 60 minute lunch, 4 days per week and 7-8pm with a 60 minute lunch one day per week. I could be called out at just about any time day or night however...and rarely got paid any extra for it...other than occasional extra vacation days added.

Once in a while...maybe every 2-3 years, I'd hit a job that was working 4-10's. While the pay was much less (weekly) it was kind of nice having a 3 day weekend for a while. Those never lasted though...pretty soon, it was 5-10's, 6-10's, 7-12's...or more.

Yeah, I haven't spent a lot of time just working 40 hours per week. During the interview they told me that 40+ hour weeks were pretty rare. Productivity really drops off quickly without some time to rest. Seems like a good group though. Hopefully the work will be interesting.

Nowadays, I work 0 hours per week...productivity has really hit the crapper.

Is this an hourly job or salaried? Are those 8 and 9 days actually just 8 and 9 hours at the job? Many salaried jobs these days are something like 8-5 or 8:30-5, with an hour or a half hour unpaid lunch. How long is your commute?

That schedule doesn't seem too bad. You get a three day weekend every other week, which can be valuable to many people. Nice for traveling, especially. Camping, fishing, etc. Doing four 10s means you have little time before and after work, so this seems like it could be a nice compromise.

30 minute unpaid lunch. Probably 20 minute commute, I'm not exactly sure. I'm not sure what time they're going to want me to come in. I'm guessing 0630 or 0700.

10 hour days or maybe even the 13.3 one for sure. The biggest pain in the ass about work is simply the commute time. It sucks. It costs me about 45 minutes each way, so approx 1.5 hours every day is dedicated to commuting. Waste of time.

That said, I'm salary like most Americans, so I tend to work 10 hour days anyways, I just don't get anything from it =/

I've only ever worked 5 days a week so I opted for that. The amount of hours I work per day doesn't really matter as long as I do my time over the pay period.

You mean like most Americans who work for poorly ran companies. Good companies don't do that to their employees.

I rarely have a set schedule. I work whatever I need to. Some days I may only work 5 hours and others 12 or 13.

4*10, but my preference would be a 30 hour week, maybe less. I make all the money I need in that time, and I'd rather have the time to myself.

4x10. And I would take wednesday off.

That would be my preference too. I got to do that for 1.5 years and it was great. No matter how shitty your day is you are close to a day off which can help your mindset. Plus you can go to businesses\government offices when they are less trafficked and its easier to arrange doctors appointments. A couple friends worked that shift too so we'd go to the bar too. Bars around here are pretty empty on Tuesday with and we had a variety of specials to choose from

when asked people pick many hours per day and a longer weekend but it's a known fact that unless you have crazy commutes that means the employer is getting less productivity for his money if these employees have to concentrate in any way.

straight 8 hour days, that last hour on the 4x9 days drags on way too much, i guess it also depends on your job and if it keeps you busy.

Yep. A nine hour shift means 7am - 5pm. With commute and whatnot, that's 6am-530pm. It leaves precious little time to relax.

5/8.
1 hour on, 15 min "nap" or 15 nip "jog" around the building. Don't follow the factory work bell schedule (It has it's place but with what I do)

In a dream world I'd prefer 4/10 or 3/13.3, but bloody company phones voids those and keeps pinging 24h a day work time zones. Right now I'm +/- 5/14.

I need a government job.

I love my schedule. We work 12 hour shift on a 14 day rotating schedule. Work Mon./Tues. off Wed/Thurs work Frid-Sun off Mon/Tues/ work Wed/Thurs. off Fri-Sun. Sounds complicated but it's awesome. Every other weekend is a three day weekend. Can take two days off and have seven off. I wouldn't want to work any other schedule. Only bad part is we change from days to night every two weeks.
