Ace, you should change your poll. AMD is announcing two developments related to Hammer tomorrow. Therefore, each of your options should read have two things presented in them. For example, "Microsoft's 64 bit Windows XP operating system being available upon launch AND Hammer series available sooner than Q4" or something like that. Also, add an option that goes something like "Beats me".

IMHO, one of the announcements is very likely MS's support of x86-64, but I have no clue about what the other is.

Ok,

Some things that will make AMD an excellent platform.

- M$ Support.
MS's support of x86-64, well enuff said

- Nvidia Support.
nVidia partnering with AMD for an integrated Hammer chipset. Everyone knows that VIA sux, and if AMD can somehow reduce the price to the end users. Nvidia boards will fly out the shops!! Then the quicker VIA dies the better for alot of people.

- Barton or ClawHammer pricefriendly.
Ok, nice and cheap processors so that we can run ..

- Doom3 coded for x86-64
Im sure alot of people will buy hammer systems, will buy M$ WinXP 64, to run Doom3 if its coded for 64bit, and shows massive improvement!!

Any other thoughts?

<<
Microsoft Corp. is finally expected to formally announce that it will support AMD's 64-bit "Hammer" line in future operating systems, sources said Tuesday.

Sources within AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif., said that the company will announce the Hammer support in a press conference tomorrow at 4:30 PM, after the market closes. In a notice sent to press and analysts, AMD described the press conference as one where the company "answers the 64-bit question".

No, everyone's wrong. The correct choice here is : other. See below:

******CONFIRMED********

In a stunning move, AMD has announced that it will be concentrating on two totally seperated but now united fronts: Desktop CPU production and Ice Cream.

AMD has bolstered it's line of deskop and server CPU's with 64 delicious flavors of ice cream.

While this my seem a far shot of what was expected to be announced today, it is a ingenious move by thesecond largest CPU manufacturer in the world.

With the financial strength of a major player in the technological industry, AMD is expected to run smaller companies like Friendly's and Ben and Jerry's into oblivion. This reporter can see no other options for such companies but to accept an offer for buyout and start enjoying some fine Silicon Crunch and Thermal Paste Rainbow flavors, to name a few.

This announcement has Intel, thelargest desktop and server CPU manufacturer in the world, wondering how they will combat with such an innovative approach.

"We are wondering how we will combat such an innovative approach. I mean, 64 unique flavors is just too much. It will take us years to catch up.", says an unnamed Intel employee.

Once again, AMD has the world wondering : "What next?"

Nobody expected that huh?

What about this option: OS X will be licensed for AMD machines?

(Apple is in San Jose, close to San Fran.)

Its going to be the official revealing of Windows for Hammer.

Inquirer has a scoop, seems like they were right all along (starting with those referecnces in the APIs.

so there's reallu no need for a poll.

Also, x86-64 for OSX will not happen. Sure, porting the OS and a few small aps may not be a problem, but what about all the other apps? What about all the drivers? No, I don't think so.

I wonder if 64-bit Windows will really be a Big Thing. That plus AMD being a distant second to Intel in the corporate world means the announcements may amount to Jack Squat. Or am I just a spoil sport?

what does all that 64bit Win XP talk mean for the "normal" user ?

Who is the market for that news ? I'd rather see big announcements regarding Parhelia specs...but well...maybe i am wrong and "64bit windows" has some..ehrm...significance ... ?

I always thought it would be REALLY great news the day AMD finally meets/exceeds the 2ghz barrier with one of their CPUs. It's about time !!!!!

Their CPUs should get a boost in real mhz so they can get rid of that moronic PR rating and kick Intel's a$$

<< The rumor mill at Vans hardware is even hinting to something a little more interesting

http://www.vanshardware.com

it's to the effect that MS is telling Intel to adopt x86-64 or else get left behind
>>

For those people to lazy to visit his site:

Microsoft is Committed to AMD?s x86-64:

Sources attending Seattle?s WinHEC 2002 maintained that Microsoft has successfully pressured Goliath chipmaker Intel Corporation into adopting archrival AMD?s new 64-bit chip language. According to our confidential sources, the Redmond, Washington-based software vendor expressed a clear preference for Advanced Micro Devices? x86-64 instruction set over Intel?s competing IA-64. Furthermore, the OS developer advised Intel to comply with x86-64 if the Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker desired ongoing 64-bit support.

Used in AMD?s upcoming ?Hammer? line of 64-bit processors, x86-64 is a straightforward yet much more powerful evolution of the existing 32-bit x86 instruction set. Seen as the blood enemy of Intel?s IA64, a CPU lingo introduced with the flagging ?Merced? Itanium, Intel?s adoption of AMD?s x86-64 serves as a resounding victory for the much smaller MPU designer.

Despite being severely handicapped in size, AMD is widely viewed as the superior innovator. In fact, AMD has been awarded more U.S. patents each of the last three years than Intel. For 2001, AMD ranked 14th in the world and 5th in the U.S. in number of U.S. patents awarded with 1,090. Intel trailed with only 811 U.S. patents in 2001.

Our sources also allege that top Microsoft decision makers view x86-64 as the clearly superior solution over IA64, an underperforming VLIW architecture widely judged as Byzantine. Intel is expected to make a formal announcement of its x86-64 support, code-named ?Yamhill,? in June or July during a face-saving presentation delivered with Microsoft.

This is Vanshardware of course, so take it with a nice, large grain of salt.

I think it will be the x86-64 microsoft support and the official processor name.

BUT

I consider the processor name to be an added "party favor" and that would leave 1 more surprise

If I'm way off base here someone clue me in, If Microsoft is indeed going to work with AMD in implementing 64-bit OS's that would in itself be great, but really in the near future it won't change anything and later on it may be a major problem. Think of it after ten years of trying to escape the horrors and pains of Windows being backward compatible with old 16-bit Dos code we are now, with Win 2K and Win XP almost completely rid of most issues of compliance. Now they decide they want to move to 64-bit????
I can see the advantage with corporate servers, database servers and the like, and I understand why Intel and AMD want to get into that market, but for the average home user I think 64-bit is still a fair way off, like three to four years minimum. So don't be putting off a new system build cause you think the minute they arrive your gonna go out and pick up a 64-bit chip and Microsofts new 64-bit OS cause it ain't gonna happen.
Think of it all software you currently use, all of it will need to be either updated or will run in some 32-bit emulator at half the speed and twice the errors. Right now the only real value for a 64-bit chip is a much larger memory address and we are not even close to the max of 4GB that 32-bit CPU's can handle so there really is no need for it. So everyone needs to take a step back and relize this isn't going to affect any of us anytime soon. (Unless you run Linux of course!!!)
