You and I both know the marriage tax penalty was rare (it didn't apply to the vast majority of married couples). My statements go beyond income tax though. You gave a convertable to a non-spouse? As a public accountant you should realize that you are now well on your way to qualifying for the gift tax (I don't know any of the details of your overall life so the gift tax may not apply). The gift tax would not apply if you were married. Things like insurance (auto insurance is the most common) may very well be more expensive for you too. Then there is the whole question of estate taxes when one of you dies (may or may not have an impact on your particular situation). Will she always be employeed with a full health insurance plan? Or is there a possibility of problems there down the road?Originally posted by: Fmr12B
The only financial benefit would be to her. There used to be a marriage tax penalty in the tax code, so please, explain the Benefits to me.
So she is upset, and you are unwilling to do the hard work to make it better. That isn't a receipe for success either. You may very well go on just fine for the rest of your lives. However, statistics show though that couples living together for multiple years have a greater breakup chance than married couples. Since the divorce rate is 50%, being worse than that isn't saying much.Only thing she is upset about is...Relationships are hard work.

This goes beyond just financial reasons though. Girlfriend sick in the hospital? Good luck visiting her if they are strict and allow family only. Overall, there are ~1000 federally guaranteed benefits to married couples that others don't get. These include social security benefits, sick leave, medical decisions for spouse, etc. There are countless state benefits as well. These include: pension transfer, child custody, court immunity from testifying against your spouse, joint parental rights, etc.

I'm done with this thread. But I'll ask one thing of you. Is there one good reason not to do it?

Auto insurance already classifes us as Married.
No need for the Gift Tax on the 'vert
Every company I have ever worked for allowed for same-sex/LTR benefits. No issue with her coming onto my plan for Health Insurance.
Not too worried about her staying employed with once company or another.
Estate taxes: Now that does complicate, but since we have a child together I believe if I passed on, child/mom gets the SS benefit.
GF had Emergency surgery last year, no issue with me visiting or talking to her Dr's, Nurses.
Yeah, as stated in my previous post. She is upset she doenst have a 2-month Salary Platinum & Diamond rock on her finger. Other than that, shes HAPPY!
IF marriage guranteed happiness and long lasting "til death do us part" relationship I would agree.
Nope, no good reasons to not be married. Just my preference.
