<<For the same price as a console, a few extra controllers and a game or two I could build a new computer system that can do more than play a couple games.>>

Haha, I'd certainly like to see you build yourself a $300 machine w/ monitor and play games, or for that matter, do any kind of productive work on it. That's call torturing, I'd pick console anyday if I only had $300.

<<Consoles are too expensive. You need to buy all sorts of extra crap for them. Not like computers where you have choices in brands and quality and stuff.. they can rip you off with consoles because only their hardware will work (most of the time)>>

Yep, Im sure the Voodoo2 you have from four years ago still works like a dream with today's games.

<<None. Consoles suck.>>

Well PCs can suck any console's d!ck. Way to argue.

To me console gaming is a lot more fun than pc gaming. No patches to worry about, no buying new hardware for it to run fast enough. Just plug it in and it works. And the machines are so cheap (complete system runs as much as a mid to high end video card for a pc) I can't help but enjoy it. I'll DEFINATELY be getting Gamecube (about 75% of the games I see for it I actually want. I have a PS2 and the only game I want is FFX which is almost a year away ). As for Xbox, I'll have to see about that one. It really doesn't look all that interesting to me (too much like a pc), but if there's a game for it that I really want then I'll pick one of them up.

Wow, Xbox edged out the GameCube, PS2 was 3rd. Surprising to say the least!

Eh LXi, Don't include the monitor in the price... that would be the same as including the TV in the price of the console. Since my TV costed 550 dollars that would mean my ps2 costed 950 dollars ((costed me 500 dollars for ps2 including 3 memory cards, 2 games, monster cable svideo, extra controller, etc, and yes I factor this in because otherwise the PS2 would have been a paperweight) (subtracted 100 for the games)). Granted people are more likely to have a TV lying around than a monitor... the fact is still there that you can't just buy a ps2 and use it unless you have the TV. You can build a monitorless PC for 300.

I think what's been revealed in this thread is enlightening. Consistently people say that they have bought a console in the past for one game (eg. Zelda) or plan to buy a new next-gen console for one particular game (eg. GT3). I think the console race will be won not by who has the best graphics, or who has the most features. I think it will be won by who develops the game that everyone JUST HAS TO HAVE.

I personally think that if GT3 is as cool as it seems AND if Sony reduces the cost of the PS2 to be competitive with the GC ($199) that Sony will continue to dominate the console market.

I myself plan to buy a GC for the launch Mario game and the future Zelda game and a PS2 if they reduce the pricetag and if GT3 is as cool as "they" say.

I already have a PS2, I have no intention of buying another console. If I did go with another console, it would be Xbox

I think its hard to speculate which one is better and which one to get b/c 2 of the consoles aren't released, and all the kick-ass games for PS2 haven't been released.
But if u wanna speculate, lets speculate . I'd personally go for the PS2 b/c of MGS2, the FF series, GT3, and the clincher: the fact that i can buy PSX classics and play them on my PS2 (and there are a whole lot of PSX classics out there). My 2nd choice would be an XBox b/c it does have power, and it looks to me like a lot of thought has been put into its design and marketing, but the only games that i'd wanna get for it are HALO and Tony Hawk 3, ane one or two others, but i think PS2 will have more and better games in the long run.

Btw, the argument that PS2 is bad b/c its hard to develop for is BS, it WAS hard to develop for, that was when it was just released, now developers have had a lot of time to play around w/ it, and come this fall, you'll see games that begin to show the system's true potential

As the moment, I'm more than happy with my Dreamcast. Loads of excellent games for very nice prices. I've been playing the caca out of Phantasy Star Online for months now, and Grandia 2, and others are also taking my attention at the moment. Then I shouldn't even have to mention the fact that Sonic Adventure 2 just came out, unfortunatly I won't be able to get my copy until Sunday. Anyway, that's where I am for now. For the coming future, I'm leaning towards X-box after seeing a movie of Jet Set Radio-Future being shown off. Awesome stuff there, really. I'm still wanting a GameCube as well, for the potential plethora of Sonic Team games that will be there. So yeah. I may be a PC fan/user/game player at times, but I'm a console gamer at heart.

rogue squadron looks like it will kill. so i guess i'll have to pick that bundle when i preorder the GC. stupid bundles... always come with a bunch of unneeded crap... at least with the GBA my strategy of waiting paid off and i waltzed into best buy and got essentially one of amazon's $200 bundles for $150... but i don't think that will happen with GC.

wonder when GBA will pass ps2 in terms of unit sales? i heard they've already sold more than half a million of them... and thats without much advertising... ps2 didn't pass the million mark until march or something due to sony's famous manufacturing difficulties.

If you want it now and wanna save some money, get the Dreamcast.
If you want it now and also need a DVD player, get the PS2.

Dreamcast has lots of great games, but it's also discontinued.
PS2 has potential and will have great games to come.

Or you can spend more money, but first need to wait for the new Nintendo or Microsoft machines. You'll also have to wait for games to come. And Microsoft is an unknown. They might have bucks, but commitment only goes as far as the mighty dollar.

True, but I'd rather sit around a console playing games with my real life friends than to be typing to strangers in Quake 3.

Hm?? You only need one controller and one memory card to play, and you dont have to use a $550 TV in order to run the PS2. I seriously dont think extra memory cards and controllers would cost that much, and s-video is not a necessity either. Also, I can find a decent 27" inch TV for around $230, which you can't even get a 19" monitor with.

If you argue that PCs do much more than consoles, I can argue that a TV alone does much more than a monitor alone. Most families need a TV, not all families need a PC/monitor. Even if you can build a $300 monitorless PC, it would be a severely crippled one. I think the point about monitor/TV is all moot.
