DEFINITELY the 70s. Although my favorite band (the Beatles) were pretty much in the 60s, the 70s had a huge number of great artists in their heyday. From rock to folk to funk, the 70s definitely saw the best music of any decade IMO.

70s beat any decade hands down

EXACTLY Once MTV came out talent wasn't necessary anymore. All you needed was some a$$ shaking or vulgarity and the video was a hit and the records sold. I don't know how many times I have herad someone say,as they were listening to the radio" I love this song it has a great video"

I'm going for 70s...I'd say, overall, 66-78.
Black Sabbath.
The Beatles on drugs (how can you not love Dear Prudence, Happiness is a Warm Gun, etc.?)
The real Pink Floyd (debatable)
EL&P
Jethro Tull
Rainbow (One word: Stargazer)
'Zep
The early Aerosmith (Uncle Salty, Walk This Way, Sweet Emotion, No More No More, You See Me Crying...all awesome)
Deep Purple (listening to Made in Japan now)
Jesus Christ Superstar (coincedence that it follows Deep Purple? Nope--Ian Gillan is a great Son of God )
Nazareth
David Bowie
Fleetwood Mac
Ottis Redding--'Retha did Respect better, and the Black Crows did a pretty good Hard to Handle, but his was better, and Satisfaction...just go and die for that alone, Jagger.
Queen
Steppenwolf

Yeah.
Except for a few (Faith No More's "Epic" comes to mind) out there, the video and song(s) should be weighed separately...

Its hard for me to decide because I listen to all types of music from the 60s to the present. I'm kinda partial to the 80s because that is what I grew up on. Admittedly, a lot of the pop songs are crap when you break them down and try to decifer any meaning or depth from them. But you gotta admit there are a lot more diversity in the 80s than the present pop music. Artists at least try to be different from one another. MTV use to play videos because it was far more varied and interesting back then. Now the music conglomerates seem to have a formula for churning out artists. The music execs seems to "know" what would make the most money. Following their model, originality is about dead.

For pure rock n roll and song writing, its hard to argue with music of the 60s and 70s. They didn't have the recording equipment we have nowadays. They didn't hide mediocre voices (of pretty faces) with studio editing. You had to have real talent to make it. The music was more pure and raw and has a certain energy about them. It really made me wish I was in high school in those era to know what it was really like.

90's. Pearl Jam was big, Sound Garden was big, Dave Mathew's Band was getting started, and of course, Nirvana. Good times, good music, but yes, ANYTHING beats the crap playing today.
