The language I should learn, which I could certainly label as "very" useful in Colorado, is Spanish.

spanish (or messicin) is useful in every state of the union.

Very true...but one might argue that knowing Spanish would be a bit more useful to me in Colorado than, say, when I lived in Wisconsin.

not really sure about that... my last trip thru wisconsin a couple summers ago i was surprised. ive also heard from friends in iowa that mexicans were more prevalent than i had thought. im from az, if you dont know much spanish in my neighborhood, renting movies, getting food and all kinds of things are fairly iffy.

For future usefulness, I'm going to suggest Chinese, especially Mandarin. Think of the business opportunities!

If you're learning a language for business or travel (rather than literature or culture), I wouldn't pick German; most Germans, particularly young, educated, urban, and/or professional Germans, speak English.

Well, the thing that got me thinking about German was that I'd like to travel to the Alps some day. Maybe Austria or Switzerland.

Where are all of the Japanese votes coming from? Why Japanese?

Well, I would be able to understand the Nazis in all of those WW2 movies I like to watch.

Spanish: it will open up more geographical locations and cultures than any other second language.

True, true. I've never been a huge fan of the Latino (is that the right word) cultures that I've studied. Because I moved around so much as a kid, I've had several Spanish teachers from several different areas (Castillian, Cuban, and Chillean that I can remember). Hopefully Spanish will just kind of come, since I'm familiar with the core of it. I just need the vocabulary.

Learn Russian. The Ruskies have a LOT of land to rape and pilfer for their wood, oil and minerals.

I like the individual who is evil enough to rape and pilfer a land for its resources, but respectful enough to learn the native language of the inhabitants beforehand. Shows class.

I am a American. What did you expect?

I like Deutsch. Been studying it awhile, but still far from decent at it. While it's uses may be limited I'd quite like to live there someday, so useful for me.

German is extremely useful for the many, many technical articles written in German. French is extremely useful in that not inconsiderable swath of the world which is still first or second language Francophone.

You need to get out more.

Of the ones listed I would be most interested in Japanese or German. But if it's just learning a language for the fun of learning a language why are you limiting your choices to such a small list? Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Arabic, Tagalog, Vietnamese.... there's a lot more to choose from.

Learn French. With your near mastery of English, you would prosper in Viet Nam, tu as compris?

German, if you're up for a challenge. The declensions are the same as latin if I recall, or similar. I've always wanted to study it. I may get the rosetta stone for it.
