We're going to need more info, such as:

Which model numbers are you considering?
What are the prices for each of these printers?

HP and Epsons printers vary greatly depending on if it's an entry level $40 printer or a photo quality $400 printer.

HP's. The damn things run forever, you cant kill them. They have to make their $ on ink that way cause you're not buing new printers.

Canon and Epson have ONE advantage over HP. they have their paper feeder in the back and don't have to roll the paper completely around so that they allow for and handle thicker paper better than HP. other than that it's hard to beat an hp.

They are both good printer producer.
HP printer is seen more readly in offices, but the ink is expensive.
Epson colour is just about as good as HP, but may slightly lack in the text printing when you compare them under a magnify glass. You can get third party colour cartrige therefor ink is cheaper.

You might want to check out the Minolta magicolor 2300 DeskLaser at $800.00 list if you are going to do a large number of prints.

Canon "S" series my preferred option to HP or Epson...... the S300 is very good for the price, S520 is even better as it has individually replaceable ink cartridges.

Cheers

For general purpose either is fine. For photo printing I find the Epson photo printers to be far superior when used with Epson paper.

I voted Epson although my current printer is a Deskjet 1120C.

My thoughts on this are:

If you want an all-round printer (text, presentations, homework, photo printing) you can't go wrong with a Stylus C70/C80 or with the new Stylus C82 ($149 on epson.com)

If you only want to print text with an occasional photo go with an HP Deskjet 960cse (or any other 900+ HP model).

If you want to save money on ink refills go with a Cannon (there's loads of recycled brands available for Canons).

just my 0.02 cents (of an ? Euro )

Definitely Epson. Superior printer. They set the standard and HP follows . . . especially when you're talking inkjet technology. Better bang for the buck, and they run forever also. However, they are not very forgiving when you put aftermarket ink into them. Just do more head-cleaning if you do. Have mine for 5 years now, even if it's just a backup (as of last month when I replaced it with a multi-function). Even my 600 does an outstanding job on photos.

Anyone had a chance to play with the new Canon i850. It seems to be mostly a follow-up to the excellent S750 general purpose printer, but also includes more photo-oriented features (like borderless printing). It's listed on the Canon USA website under both "All Purpose" and "Photo". Only uses the four-ink system, not the 6 with 2 photo colors unfortunately, but I'm wondering how photo printout compares with the S820 or S900.

Epson in that case, btw you can get Epson compatible ink carts real cheap, and they work fine,I`ve been using them for the last 4 years .

Something like C60 or the newer C62 is your price range, even the C80 is about $100 online.

I voted Epson since I have experience (860 then the 880, along with various others). I buy my printers at around $50-80 new at office depot usually on their inventory updates....when the C80 came in I snagged my 880.

I buy replacement inks at around $3 black and $5 color and get equal to Epson's replacements in printing.

However, I hear Canon is ever better on ink and print quality.

I print fast as I need and on glossy paper (bought at OD clearance for $3 / 100 sheets) nice!

Neither.

I have had Epson and HP, but chucked them for Canon S900. Best Photo printer.
For economical black n white printing, Samsung ML-1430 laser.

If your printing needs are more modest, matters little which one you get.

I have an S600 Canon. Prints fast but takes forever to start printing.
Also have an HP 820cse (older model), that has been working forever and prints great.
Use an Epson Photo 1280 at work and have found that the ink consumption on both the Canon and Epson is much greater than the HP.
Drying time is longer and paper saturation is higher on the Canon and Epson.

I am leaning to going back to the HP model because of the ink and Auto duplexing offered on some models (940,960,6122). Really need to know how the speed compares to the 6122 and 960/940 models?
I have refilled my ink cartridges on the Canon S600 canon 3:1 over the HP 820.
So I don't think I am saving any money, even by buying bulk ink and refilling.

Can't say about the Epson as the 1260 is too new to guage ink consumption, other than paper saturation.

I've got an Epson SC880 - a great general purpose printer that does pretty good on photos as well. For photos, I'd choose Epson, but HP would probably be fine as well. Just be sure you don't leave an Epson printer idle for more than a couple weeks, because some have experienced head clogging issues which are very hard to cure (I've not had any problem, but maybe I'm lucky).

Hey, I'm a HP sales rep anyways, I recommend getting a hp 5550 for $149 - can be upgraded to 6 color photo's for 25$ more or the HP 920c for 69$ - has best deal for black ink, it comes with a #15 black that has 27 ml of ink, but when you replace it you can but the cheaper #45 black that has 42 ml of ink, really good deal.

Also for all you skeptics on how much HP ink costs, go compare at any store the amount of ink the cartridge holds and the price, i've seen cheaper cartridges from other brand but they usually hold about 5 ml of ink, and then there are those that just happen to forget to put amount of ink that the cartridge contains. When comparing cost don't forget to consider that the hp's have a printhead in each cartridge you buy and don't need to clean it every time you turn on your computer/printer, thus saving ink.
If your still not convinced then wait till your cannons or epson printers built-in printhead fails on you.

Feel free to PM me with any more questions you may have, I am a HP sales rep and know mostly HP products in detail, and if your mind is set on a brand please don't ask for info just to show me how badly your mind is set already or how your don't need the features that HP offers, simply don't waste my time, I'm not being payed for this, I just saw this topic and thought I may be able to help.
