Ok so this is linked to the kitchen reno that we are doing here. Take a look here to see the thread about that:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2135225

Anyway we are currently very split on which kicthen sink to get. Originally we settled on this one:

Which is still the one that I heavily prefer. However my mother is now dead set on getting a recessed sink, either porcalin or stainless steel. Something like this but stainless steel or porcelain:

Which would you go for?

Oh, I was gonna say I only like recessed if it's stainless steel. I'd probably go for that, but it depends on what your countertop will be? Too lazy to check the thread.

It will be a black quartz product. Not 100% real stone but made from quartz, stone and other stuff. Looks fairly nice.

The second one is fugly, it looks like you should take a dump in it, first one ftw.

Edit: Just read that it's different colour that your looking for, I still prefer the first one.

I would like to say recessed sinks are more useful, but I have to admit I have only used the traditional lip-mounted type.

EDIT: I think neckarb a) can't read well, and b) has terrible taste.

I very much prefer recessed sinks. I don't like stainless just because it looks dirtier.

No amount of good looks can overcome the sheer convenience of wiping off the counters into a recessed sink.

Yeah, that's what I thought too, but I couldn't give such an adamant recommendation without having used one myself.

How are the maintenance aspects of it? Say you needed to remove the sink from the countertop?

Then you'd have to remove the countertop. A stainless sink would look best recessed, though, if only to keep its fugliness to a minimum. I don't like the way stainless looks, but I would get it anyway because it's the most low-maintenance and practical material for a sink. It may scratch, but it won't chip, stain or rust, and will basically last forever; perfect for a recessed mount.

I chose the second based on how much I hate when you don't notice little bits of crap building up in the right angle between the counter and the sink.

Disgusting and easy to overlook little stuff that makes you wonder later "what IS that smell?".

Question: Do you cook a lot? If not, then pick whichever you think looks nicer (in your case, the first one). If you do, then pick a recessed sink, because utility will be much more important than looks if you actually use the sink and counters a lot.

You can do integrated silestone sinks now. They look really clean.

Oooo.. *eyes sparkling*

Anyway, I'd go with recessed. Also make sure the faucet is up high above the actual sink so you can put shit under it to clean it off. Fucking hate it when the faucet is literally a few inches away from the top of the sink. Makes it impossible to put big dishes in and FUCK THAT SHIT I FUCKING HATE IT.

Faucet is key.

Best advice anyone can and has given.

Stainless is easy, but definately not the best in the looks department..

Best way to go IMHO.

the first one makes the kitchen look like a bathroom or like an old kitchen.
I like recessed (but big enough) shiny stainless steel sinks.

My sink also has a detachable faucet: if you pull it, it comes out with a tube like in the shower and it's very good to fit big stuff under it and wash from the side. It's also got 2 buttons on it: if you click one, it will go in shower mode, with the circle of water rays coming out with higher pressure.

The first one looks like a lab sink on a lab counter with a lab faucet. The only thing missing is the aspirator nozzle to suck vacuum. I like it.

The second one does not much for me. The recessedness would make it easier to clean the counter.

Agreed. We went with a recessed stainless steel sink a few years ago when we replaced our counter top. I love it, the left side is oversized and deeper than the right which has the garbage disposal.

The sink our house came with was white porcelain and had a chip in it and the coating was worn pretty thin in the bottom and around the drain after only 10 years. It was almost impossible to keep it looking nice.

Kind of hard to see the sink in this pic but you get the idea.

I love the sink that JulesM posted. In OP's pictures, I think the first one looks fugly.

edit: my wife likes the top one better. I'm retarded when it comes to how things look & she's got excellent taste. So...

Yeah, awesome kitchen. I like that granite.

Anyways, I voted for recessed stainless.

Thanks! You should have seen the kitchen before. It had oak cabinets with white tile countertops and a white porcelain sink. It looked really dated.

We freaking love that granite. My wife and I picked it out from a local place that specializes in nothing but granite countertops. Since we spend a lot of time in the kitchen and familyroom it was well worth it. That was $5k for those countertops installed, including the sink.

that's my immediate thought. I like the first one more, but would opt for the second one b/c of cleaning.

I  Jule's kitchen.
