They were years past their expiration date? Toss it. Giving them away just makes you look like a pompous ass.

Logically I'd say people are free to decide if they want it or not, however what could the consequences be if for some reason they got food poisoning from it? Could they go after you in any way? Common sense says no, but it's pretty much extinct.

Your wife was correct. I remember back in the navy, early 1970's we were eating ham that was canned in 1945. It was good!

No, that's the beautiful thing about donating it. That shit is tax deductible so the poor get 10 year old canned ham and you get a tax write off. Winning!

As long as the canning didn't fail, no dents, bulges or, discolored labels, the food is perfectly safe to consume. Food quality may have decreased but, not as much as you might think. The folks who won't eat expired food have been brainwashed by marketing departments.

You're completely wrong.

Tinned food can last decades. I don't get why you'd throw out otherwise perfectly good food because of an arbitrary number on the tin.

A tax write-off on 15 cans of food.

What is that, like $20-30?

Lots of ignorant people in the world, including everyone of those people that voted with Sandeagle.

Harvard Food Law & Policy Clinic found that "more than 90% of American are tossing food when they shouldn’t be, and 40% of our food supply is dumped every year because of food dating." That's pretty stupid given how many people go hungry in our own country every day. I'm still shocked that people on here are afraid to eat food that's been in the refrigerator for a day.

Perhaps you could have redeem them to pay off your credit card debts? :whiste:

Didn't read, but was going to say OP was right. Then I saw OP's handle.

Now I don't know what to think.

its easy for all of you to talk the talk. but how many would have actually eaten a can of Cambpells tomato soup that was 2 years past expiration? or a can of pineapple that expired in 2011? what about acidity? think about that? bottom line is i wouldn't take the chance or put anyone else in harm's way. if the product was still good, maybe the manufacturers should extend out the expiration date?

I do it all the time. Canned food has an undetermined expiration, that's in no way reflected by the date on the can. Opening it, and trying it is the only way to tell. Sometimes they taste too much like can, but as long as they haven't been exposed to air, they're safe and nutritious.

(1) The wife is right
(2) In any case where (1) may be incorrect, the Husband was involved at some point, and he clearly gave incorrect information.
(3) Therefore: (1)

My wife said that you were right. She said to throw that old shit out.

Leaving it by the curb seems like an odd thing to do anyway, unless you live in a rough neighborhood and people around you are desperate for food.

so we were cleaning up some cabinets and found like 15 canned foods that had gone anywhere from 1 to 2 years past their expiration dates. wife asked me to put them in a box and place them out next to the trash in case any one wants them. weird, never heard of that. she said she saw some show and people do it all the time. instead i ended up tossing them in the garbage as i could not in good conscience allow anyone to eat anything i wouldn't eat myself. she was upset that i threw them away. was i right or was i right?

Stand your ground man, don't be one of these wife's always right people
