i was surprised i had to scroll so far down in the thread to see him mentioned. Extremely good...if you guys havent heard any of his stuff before, go pick up a cd...dream theater is awesome. in addition to portnoy, John Petrucci is definatly one of the top 5 guitarist of all time (IMO)...same goes for John Myung on bass...and James LaBrie on vocals...their keyboardist isnt half bad either, dunno his name off hand
Hey, I love DT and LTE. I'm a big fan of Petrucci. But top 5 ever? You're atta your mind. Petrucci is great, but he doesn't touch Satriani or Vai. And those are just two guitarists around today.

Lars is above average. Not great, but defintely above average. Hammet definitely has skill. Also, not the best, but he got game.

There are millions of people around the world that can play metallica songs. It's all about distortion .. it can make the lamest stuff sound good. that's my secret, anyway ... crank up the overdrive on the marshall.

Yeah, I know how it's done, I'm a guitarist too.
But there are very few people around the world that can sound like Hammet playing it.

Me, too. I was starting to think I would be the first to post Mike Portnoy.

Can't believe I didn't think of Portnoy. He is awesome.

Nick Menza, ex Megadeth, always had a great playing style and played with a lot of feeling. I liked him a lot too.

Bostaph, who I already mentioned. That guy is sick.

Chris Kontos, ex Machine Head (played on the first album) I love his performance on that record, though I don't think he did anything besides that, so while he can't get a "best ever" due to limited exposure, great performance throughout that album.

There's so many more too...

I've been a Metallica fan since '88, and play guitar myself. Several drummers have told me that Lars isn't that great of a drummer, as far as technicality. I love his sound and the double-bass and stuff, but I heard on the CD's it's all punched in. Meaning, he plays a fill here and a fill there, and puts it all together with a computer, but he can't play it through himself. I read an interview where Lars admitted he wasn't a very good drummer. I think he got his first kit at 16, and recorded Kill Em All at 18. His best work was from '84-'88 in my opinion. Nothing he's done in the past 10 years has impressed me much.

That guy uses triggers and sampling. I used to be impressed by him until I learned that. Thumbs down to him.

I don't understand that, because he does the stuff in live shows too.

Nothing wrong with using technology. Musically, he's a great drummer, and he kicks for every one of those beats. He does it because it is impossible to capture the studio sound live, so he samples to create in his opinion the best sounds possible and uses them for both. Put it this way... it was sampled and you didn't know it until your friend told you. He's that good at what he does. Plus ya gotta give him credit for the balls to use technology in the first place.

I'll second a vote for Paul Bostaph. If you listen to any of his stuff from Forbidden, those fills and the off-time stuff he does is sweet. Charlie Benante (Anthrax) is also a superb drummer as well.

the best drummers in modern rock and roll are

jimmy chamberlin - smashing pumpkins, zwan, etc
danny carrey - tool

those two guys have it all, speed, creativity, feel, talent, and an eerie sense of what beat is right for the song.

if you've ever seen jimmy live, you know he's not human. all those quick fills and accents and rolls? HE DOES THEM WITH ONE HAND. not only that, he does them twice as fast as on the records, because the pumpkins played really fast live. honestly, if you listen closely you realize he is playing some of the most dense beats in rock and roll, but he does it so effortlessly and so subtely that you wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it. when you see him live, it doesn't even look like he's trying hard because he's so fast and his wrists are so strong that he doesn't need to flail his arms around to get power.

and danny carey, well his drumming just speaks for itself.

lars ulrich is a skilled drummer but a terrible musician. his feel for the instrument is awful. if you want to listen to the same drumming style done correctly, listen to Andrew WK's lastest album, the drumming is fantastic.

dave grohl is great just for the energy he puts into his playing, but he's not the best.

He uses a foot petal system to substitute for his lost arm, but it does take a bit more skill than if he had both arms. Truthfully, I don't think he was really that great even on their early stuff.

Dave Grohl is a superb drummer. He drums for many bands, but sings lead for his main.

He was the drummer for Nirvana.

He also did the whole first Foo Fighter's album by himself, ever vocal, guitar, drum, bass, everything.. it was just him.

David Grohl definitely deserved to be on that list. He also did the drumming on the last Queens of the Stone Age album.

Nother vote for Dave.
