Greatest drummer of all time is Nikko McBrain of Iron Maiden. The guy is simply amazing. Listen to his stuff. Piece of Mind was his first album with the group.

McBrain and Steve Harris on bass form the greatest rthymn section in rock and are one of the main reasons Maiden is so brilliant.

He was the drummer for Nirvana.

He also did the whole first Foo Fighter's album by himself, ever vocal, guitar, drum, bass, everything.. it was just him.

David Grohl definitely deserved to be on that list. He also did the drumming on the last Queens of the Stone Age album.

Actually, Lars isn't that great at double bass, especially not any more. Believe me, I'm a huge Metallica fan, so I'm not bashing them or anything, but Lars used a lot of studio magic for his double bass (for the song Dyer's Eve, he just played a quick bit and then had that section repeated throughout the song because he didn't have the stamina nor the precision required for it). But he could do some pretty slick double bass ("One," for example, is fricken awesome) And he's actually a pretty sloppy drummer, BUT, he puts a lot of emotion into his playing, and you can tell he really feels the music when he's playing. For that I'd rate him higher than Max, who to me seems almost robotic in his playing.

Of course neither are anything compared to the likes of Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart or Virgil Donati.

MIKE PORTNOY hands down. From Dream Theater and Liquid Tension. The guy is so good it's scary.

And when you compare Lars to his contemporary metal drummers, he is downright mediocre. You may not enjoy the "blast beats" used in death and black metal, but you have to respect them. I saw Dimmu Borgir live a couple of weeks ago, and I was watching their drummer's feet during the songs. He was hitting all of the complex double bass parts spot on, no triggering or sampling. I played drums in high school, so I have a good appreciation for what it takes to drum like some of these guys. And Lars can't compare to them.

But I still enjoy Lars (old) drumming because it fits the music. Nothing wrong with that.

Triumph, have you ever seen or heard of Emperor? Trym, the drummer, is so fast it's frightening. Watch the video for "Empty" and listen and look at his double bass, and his drum rolls. He's amazing. Too bad they split up

the Dimmu drummer is very good too. Another really fast drummer is the guy from Behemoth (can't think of his name right now)

BTW, I still have no idea what a "blast beat" is... People have tried explaining it to me, but I'm not a drummer so I don't know what to listen for.

i was surprised i had to scroll so far down in the thread to see him mentioned. Extremely good...if you guys havent heard any of his stuff before, go pick up a cd...dream theater is awesome. in addition to portnoy, John Petrucci is definatly one of the top 5 guitarist of all time (IMO)...same goes for John Myung on bass...and James LaBrie on vocals...their keyboardist isnt half bad either, dunno his name off hand

Neal Peart/Danny Carey/Stewart copeland/Spug from Mudvayne

Out of the two listed, I'd say Max, just cuz Lars is extremely overrated and does the whole 'stand-up' thing too damn much lol.

EDIT: Dimmu's drummer has insane double-kick, but He's pretty "Typecast" into black/death metal. Personally I'd take the dude from Fear Factory over him anyday.

Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater is sick ... Neal Peart from Rush ... both great rock drummers

Max is an amazing jazz drummer. So is Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews Band.

Josh Walters from The Juliana Theory is also a great drummer (but little known band).

Lars is average. No one in Metallica really has alot of technical skill. They still rock though.

Stanton Moore is my favorite drummer right now. He's not the best of all time, but I'd say he's one of the absolute best nowdays. It's mainly jazz, so I'm assuming most folks here don't know him. Great stuff, though.
