Poll: Will Trump Pardon Manafort?

This poll, or rather, its topic, is highly consequential. What's happening with Manafort right now is down page in the media due to the hurricane, and Fox News is pretending that today's big story is some women "standing up for Kavanaugh."

I think we're reaching some kind of tipping point with the Mueller probe, where something big is going to happen. But I'm not sure exactly what.

So Manafort pleads guilty to a metric shit-ton of crimes and is fully cooperating with Mueller on all topics. Manafort is at the hub of everything that was going on between Trump's campaign and the Russian government. For Crissakes, Manafort's business partner was a former agent with the same Russian intelligence agency that hacked the DNC and Podesta e-mails. There's no doubt that Manafort can damage Trump badly, by implicating members of his family, and possibly Trump himself.

So does Trump pardon him now in order to invalidate the agreement and render further cooperation pointless?

Two problems for Trump. First, Manafort may still face state law charges and hence could continue cooperating even after a federal pardon. Second, Manafort has likely already provided Mueller with substantial information over at least 4 days now.

Next question. What happens after a pardon?

I think a pardon will give him even more trouble than not to... He needs his mentor and master to whip up the novichok again to have a chance to get out of this one.
edit : this is the beginning of the end... imo

Not now, before he cooperated with Mueller I would have said yes. Trump and his loyalty thing....

Manafort picked which side he was going to get the best deal he could and which side he could trust more. Seems to me his logical side won out over the crazy.

What Manafort's decision also told me is what he thinks Trump's chances are for getting away with the same shit he got convicted of.

With Manafort "flipping," he's no longer "loyal." I'm not sure Trump will pardon someone who doesn't show him ultimate loyalty.

Presidents shouldn't have all that power to pardon people, particularly when it involves them personally. It's outrageous.

I don't think he will but I hope he does. Watching the GOP mental gymnastics to somehow justify it will be glorious.

I wouldn’t put it past Trump pardoning Manafort (and maybe everyone else) in a fit of pique but doesn’t it seem too late to pardon him for actually useful purposes?

The irony is that Trump's obsession with loyalty could be his downfall, since he may refuse to give pardons that would prevent his associates from revealing the most damaging info against him.

Of course, it doesn't help that Trump's loyalty requirement is one way... he insists on mindless devotion, but he will screw over absolutely everyone if it helps him.

No, it's too late for a lot of reasons.

I think Trump will use the pardon power to protect himself and possibly his kids in the event indictments loom.

Manafort is obligated to cooperate and nothing can change that, even a pardon. Trump could of course wake up and say "those damn Democrats picking on me and lying about a dozen people killed in PR? Hey, someone write up one of those pardon things so I can sign it"

He's already cooperated and it's not like Mueller would unlearn what he heard even if Trump pardoned him. A pardon is of little use to Manafort now anyway since his agreement included pleading guilty to a raft of crimes that are prosecutable on the state/local level which Trump can't do jack about, he'd be sitting duck.

Trump will again opt to try bending the narrative that all these people had nothing to do with him and nobody (else) did anything wrong. I'm thinking that presidential historians will be writing for decades about the futility of his denying the tide is coming in as he starts to drown.

It's too late to do any good. Trump probably feels betrayed now too, so he won't want to help

He doesn't help anyone unless it's actually for his own purposes.

This is the lesson Trumpers need to learn: Trump don't give a fuck about you. It's always about him.

Even if he's pardoned, it's accepting guilt and this loses 5th A rights, so could be forced to testify, and still face state level charges.

Game over man.

I've resisted voting in this poll because I think Trump's team will decide to do whatever suits Trump's interests the most with no regard for justice, whether that involves pardoning Manafort or not, I cannot say. I don't think there's any limit to what Trump would do to serve his own interests.

Have you noticed the crickets from his twitter?

It's more like the hush of gently falling snow. If Manafort is pardoned for specific crimes, the govt has more charges & he stays locked up. If he receives a blanket pardon then he can be forced to testify to a grand jury about anything. If he refuses, he stays locked up indefinitely.

If Trump pardons Manafort now, with the cooperation agreement in place, it would be obstruction of Justice. It wouldn't invalidate that agreement, anyway.

And for some reason he was on about "57 states" this morning too. Don't even know what the F that was about. Sounded like one of our posters.

I saw that, too. So persecuted.

The sooner he's out of there the better off this country will be. Not that Pence policy won't be just as bad. We'll just get less ridiculous bullshit & maybe a little more respect from the ROTW. Not that living this down will be easy, either.

I bet Trump is crying himself to sleep when he goes to bed at night, thinking about his next couple dozen tweets to fight back against the deep state jerk offs that just don't know how to listen and obey his commands like those folks do with Putin over there in KGB land.
