I don't understand the issue with storage space.
Android has USB host support, so you can plug-in a microSD card through the microUSB port, can you not? A little bit inconvenient, but much cheaper than their $100 for 8GB extra.
I am glad I just got a "used" Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus from Amazon for $169 shipped. It came basically brand new with the seal broken. It has Exynos dual core, but the GPU is more powerful than the Nexus Tab. I would like the higher resolution, but 1024x600 will suffice. Best of all, microSD slot makes this tab actually use-able for travel. As an e-book it also suffices. Better bang for the buck imho.

The adapter is $1 on ebay. I have one for my GNex. Not having sdcard slot sucks but at least the storage isn't partitioned off into different things like it's with most Android devices. You can fill the entire storage with apps and games if you want.
The Nexus 7 is Tegra 3 powered which has a faster gpu than the dual core Exynos in the Tab 7.0 Plus.
can you charge & use the adapter at the same time?
sorry gpu for gpu the Mali400 is better. 7.2-10.8 GFLOPS compared to 4.8-7.2GFLOPS. Overall performance the Nexus 7 is definitely better, but it also costs a lot more after tax and shipping.
I wish Asus would still sell the MeMo 370T for $249 which is the better version of Nexus 7. It has microSD, internal 16gig and rear camera (useless). Although it would not see JB until probably Christmas time....
Hmmm... Does that mean you're formatting the external media with ext3? Also, what happens when you unplug the cable? The adapter is $1 on ebay. I have one for my GNex. Device needs to be rooted to use USB storage.
What. USB Drive functionality is ingrained into Android.
debating. No expandable storage and tegra make me want to skip the nexus 7, that sweet IPS 1280x(720 or 800?) screen makes me want to jump in.
no sd slot.
no HDMI.
no sale for me. although the included GPS is tempting....
