How does it work outed you want to have a couple movies on there for the plane for some kids. You're going to run out of room fast!

Well, it works like so. A) You encode the movies at a lower quality level to save space and fit more on the device. Animated children's shows can be compressed quite a bit without much loss of quality too. Or B) You use a USB OTG cable and a USB memory stick.

Even though I already have an iPad 3 and planned on getting a Surface, I was initially interested in the Nexus 7, but no external storage makes this a no-go, even at $200. Problem is that space runs out too quickly and paying $50 for 8 more gigabytes just feels wrong when I can purchase a 64GB microSD card for $70 off of Amazon. Google just seems to have this hatred of microSD cards. Pass.

Yes. At Google I/O last year they even demonstrated this USB Host functionality when they plugged in a USB gamepad into an Android tablet. There should be no need to root (though someone should confirm this).

peripheral != storage

Likely will pass on this. It is better than the Kindle Fire, but not better enough to replace one.

nVidia looks to be doing pretty well this round. Seems like everybody who is anybody is making a Tegra3 tab. Still really looking forward to the jump in ST performance that comes along with the A15.

I'll probably pick up a Win8 tablet if any end up looking decent/not costing too much. Otherwise I'm waiting for A15-based tablets.

Right now, its either S4 or Tegra 3. And Tegra 3 has the better GPU, until the S4 Pro's Adreno 3xx.

Hmmm... There is a dock connector on the unit. I wonder what could be made to work with that (without rooting the tablet).

Google Nexus 7 tablet from Asus: hands-on video and photos

The headphone jack (as well as the Micro USB charging port) have been conveniently placed on the bottom of the device, which will come as a relief for those annoyed by the top-mounted configurations of competing products. Other sides are mostly bare, but there are two distinct microphone holes on the top and right edges of the system, and four pogo pins which will inevitably let you dock the Nexus 7 for power and data connection. Even with the abundance of ambient light, the glossy IPS display is bright and readable, and viewing angles are fantastic.

I ordered a 8GB model. I don't currently have a tablet mostly because I don't think I'd use one enough to justify the $400+ price. I thought this was cheap enough that I decided to bite. I'll mostly use it for random browsing from my lazy-boy while I'm watching TV. I'll also be a lot more willing to let my nephews play with this instead of my phone. They always want to play Angry Birds. If I end up not using it much, I can always sell it off without taking much loss.

Hardware looks good and the OS upgrades look good. I'm still on the fence until someone convinces me that Android tablet app development is in full swing. Otherwise I'll pass.

My brother is an iPhone user, but he also has a Transformer Prime. He constantly tells me that there are more and better Android apps, if you can find them, and that he gets bored with Apple's "walled garden."

As a Galaxy Nexus user, I would have to agree. I bought the 16GB tablet the second I learned it had come out.

I have an HP Touchpad that I use in bed and on trips (videos, comics, books) - once I can see what one of these is like then I'll probably switch over. It'd be nice to be able to hold it easily in one hand.

is this AMOLED or LCD? Im guessing LCD

I was contemplating getting this instead of the new nook simple touch with the backlight (have the first simpletouch) for reading in low light.

If it were AMOLED, i would have no problem reading white text on black background - like i do on my SGS2. Doing the same thing on the iphone 4s looks terrible, and i could never get used to reading black text on a white LCD screen.

Maybe samsung will make the next nexus tablet?

I kind of wish I hadn't spent £500 on a Transformer Prime now since the Nexus 7 is only £159 for the 8GB model.

If the device supports USB on the go then you can get an adaptor for < $5 and use a cheap 64GB USB drive for your mass storage. I can do that with my SGS2 and my Transformer Prime.

I really wish folks could launch docks at the same time they launch a product. It took half a year before the Galaxy Nexus pogo dock finally came out. And now the Nexus 7 has pogo pins and the dock doesn't even get mentioned. I assume it's coming, since they put the pogo pins on the tablet.

Considering how quickly we go through these products, it really annoys me when the accessories comes out so late.

Yup. The only reason I knew about the pins was because one reviewer pointed them out and they were in the pictures.

Did they have any comment about them whatsoever in the presentation? Cuz I didn't watch the presentation, and 98% of the hardware previews made no mention about the dock connector.

But I guess they did that on purpose if it might not be until Xmas-time before such a dock is released. Everyone would be p!ssed if they hyped up an HDMI dock or whatever, and then waited half a year to release it.

I didn't even consider the 8GB, getting the 16GB. I managed just fine with the iPad's 16GB limit, and I can do even better with Android.

Looks very sweet, but I don't want a 7 inch tablet. I've played with the amazon tablet and that size is just too constraining.

Well, I find the my iPad's 16 GB limit very restrictive, but no matter since I don't use the iPad anyway. It's my wife's machine now, and 16 GB is fine for her.
