Ordered the 8gb version for the wife. It will replace her iPad2. iPad2 is unusable. It reboots like every 15-30 seconds or so continuously. I tried system restore and it's no use. She has gone back to using iPad1. The Nexus 7 should compliment very well.

You should take it into an Apple store. Obviously no device should reboot all the time.

Probably should. It's out of 1yr basic warranty but I did buy with Amex so it should be covered another year through the card.

There's a 32GB/64GB Nexus 7?

That would completely negate the best feature of the Nexus 7. Price to performance/specs ratio.

32/64 would bring the starting price to at least $300, probably $350, putting it up against TF300 and Acer A700, and even iPad2.

Really should have had at least a microsd slot though, class 10 32gb can be had for under $20. Might get one for the wife though(And so I can play the Tegra3 games, I'm waiting on the next gen devices to spend big $$ on a tablet again.)

Those are all ~10in tablets though. Not everyone wants a 10in tablet. A 7in device is substantially more mobile, and quite a few people would pay more for the storage.

But, for the thickness of the Nexus 7, it should have an sd card slot.

I suppose for some. With many, or all, of the high end android phones being 4.6"+, a 7" tablet doesn't really appeal to me, especially if the price is near almost identically spec'd 10" tabs.

$200 is an awesome price for this device given its hardware. Just unfortunate there's no simple storage expansion. I'm all for low internal storage, $50/8gb is outrageous. Just bought a 32gb class 10 mSD for $19.50, and a 64gb SDXC ultra for $40. My TF101 with dock now has 96gb+16gb storage for a tad more than what an extra 8gb internal costs.

The reason they didn't include it is clearly because they are pushing the play store ecosystem hard, but there is probably another reason why they have a general anti-microsd card rule for Nexus devices. Idiots would go and buy a Class 2 device because its a couple dollars cheaper and then blame their new Nexus device for being slow. Consumers are morons.

You do realize the play store they're pushing so hard has games that take up a gig or so installed? 4 cutting edge Gameloft games and the 8 gig model has no space left.

Galaxy Nexus for some reason doesn't support USB OTG storage natively as well. I had to root and use the StickMount app. Not that I really care. I root all my devices. It does support MHL natively...

That's wierd, my SGS2 has native USB OTG. (I am rooted but with a stock ROM and kernel)

None. I'm sick of Android and having to root and or jiggle the thing to get it to work the way I want which is an Apple device with minor caveats. Even after rooting and using different roms, stuff has issues and crashes way more than I can tolerate.

Well, those who have tried it say Jelly Bean is a big improvement over ICS despite just being a 0.1 update, and a massive improvement over anything before ICS.

I'm cautiously optimistic with Jelly Bean 4.1... but I still want a tablet with more expandability.

Once upon a time, the Nexus 7 had an HDMI port. That's no longer the case, but can you eke some extra functionality out of the Micro USB port that remains? We spoke to Asus, and it sounds like the current version of Android doesn't allow much of it right now. As of today, the company says that the shipping build of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean doesn't support the Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) which would allow it to double as an HDMI port, nor advanced USB On-The-Go (OTG) functionality.

However, it does function as a USB host device, so you can plug certain other peripherals into the Nexus 7 and have them function. We saw Nexus 7 devices use USB ethernet adapters at Google I/O, and AnandTech notes that a mouse and keyboard will also work. Unfortunately, the publication also reports that the Nexus 7 won't recognize USB storage.

Considering that Google is selling the Nexus 7 at cost, every penny counts, so we suppose we understand. Still, it wouldn't be totally surprising if there were an ulterior motive at work. After all, the lack of a video-out makes the Nexus Q oh-so-slightly more compelling, and it might be harder to, say, sell an HDMI dock to go along with the Nexus 7's pogo pins if you could simply buy a cable to connect the tablet to your TV.

I'm still wondering what's with this pic:

Did an early HDMI-endowed prototype somehow make it onto the show floor for display? Was Google using this to demo during the keynote? I note that other pix of the Nexus 7 don't have that left port.

It does suck but cutbacks definitely had to be made for the price.

Kinda strange, even a low cost single-core SOC $90-140 Chinese tablet usually has HDMI out and with the Tegra3 SOC this would have been an awesome Netflix portable media streamer and games will play nicely, shame the option to use a bigger display is absent..

A few things things:

1) Little parts like this do matter in terms of cost.
2) Google is obviously putting a lot of time into the overall feel of the device, and it's easier to do well and quickly with a more limited feature set.
3) They want to push Google Play content.
4) They want to leave an upgrade path for 3rd party OEMs (and for themselves to a lesser extent). Create the ultimate machine, and nobody will want to upgrade, or spend more on the competition. Remember, the point here for Google is not to dominate the tablet space. It's to give the tablet makers a kickstart so they don't continue to produce crap.

In that sense, it wasn't a surprise that the Nexus 7 is what it is, which is a very nice machine for a decent price, but with some significant and intentional omissions.

It's not the part, JB 4.1 does not support HDMI but it's a huge mistake IMO, one could take this tab anywhere and it's got the guts to stream HD without breaking a sweat, with an SD slot one could use this as an awesome tablet AND a portable media server, Sorry Google, awesome machine overall but I'm with the "no sd, no HDMI=no sale" club..

Says the fans since my first Android device (cupcake). I've been disappointed since and I'm sick of holding my breath just to give competition to Apple.

I'm simply going to extend test out the devices at Best Buy or other B&M before making my decisions but I'm not hopeful for Android.

Nowhere near the apps for the Ipad series but there are still lots to choose from. Stability is getting better with each release we'll have to see once JB gets out for awhile to see where it's at now. You have to put it in this perspective, Apple is not interested in marketing a $200 tablet and even if Android has some flaws this machine appears to be well built and huge bang/buck factor..

Those are probably the best people to ask, ironically, because they've been with the platform since the beginning and have seen it grow and evolve from humble beginnings into the powerhouse it is today.

Damn no hdmi out either? Well that pretty much kills any chance I'll buy this.

I was out of town the last 2 weeks for a class my employer sent me to. Had a couple 22gb+ full Formula 1 seasons on an sd card, netflix, mlb.tv premium, games etc. and the tv had hdmi inputs. I often game at home on a large flatscreen with my tablet and wireless ps3 controller too.

Even had some fun with the projector after class was over on Friday last week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUk-LrfejAQ

That's not true. Others running JB on the Galaxy Nexus have no problem with HDMI with the adapter.
