<< Still sounds like some major cognitive dissonance to me.

"I cant get it, so I'll tell myself I dont want or need it! There!"

Don't try to deny your instincts. Bears and raccoons dont hump to procreate. They hump because they have their little orgasms. I dont know a damn person other than a priest that will go through life not having any sex BY CHOICE.
>>

You're correct in what you say about animals. Humans are animals as well, so we do have these instincts.

However, through a very strict training you can learn to control your emotions, urges and desires.

Why would anyone want to?

I'm sure if you trained your body well enough you could eat dirt or metal objects like they do on Ripley's Believe it or not....but then again I ask...Why would anyone want to?

You give yourself entirely too much credit. Mating only to procreate was thought up a thousand years ago...maybe more.
Neither have you invented the idea of population control. Communist China hatched this idea some years ago.

<< Also, the parents must be genetically 'fit' before they get permission to procreate. >>

Eugenics, eh? I almost agree with you b/c I'd love to cut the number of complete idiots running about. But I can't for 2 reasons:
1)I suspect that many of the world's idiots aren't genetically deficient.
2)It steps too closely to something George Orwell or Huxley came up with.

The institutional concept of marriage is somewhat whacked. The spiritual concept, OTOH, is sound enough.

Your youth betrays you. You're a smart guy, but there's a lot you cannot learn through study and vicarious living. If your "soul-mate" exists, that person is someone who can provide infinite mental and physical stimulation. You have a "mutual symbiosis of knowledge" but there's also a certain je ne sais quois. It's good to be above petty high school relationships, but things change once your free of the petulant squalor of being a teen. But it's something you can't explain to someone else. You can only understand once you've experienced it.

I know how you feel. I enjoy solitude. I can constantly entertain myself in my mind. Clinicians call it "Attention Defecit Disorder."
However, you have lived naught if you have only lived in your imagination. As I said...there's only so much you can learn without truly experiencing. You can play a game or read a book or act on a stage, but you haven't truly experienced it until you have truly done.

You won't get it now, but in 5-10 years, believe me, you will.

I want it for the same reason I practice martial arts: I strive for a complete control over my body. In order to achieve that, you must control your thoughts, and thus your emotions and desires.

I've also noticed that lust tends to blind any form of judgement. Even worse, it makes any kind of sane judgement impossible. I therefore consider it to be a threat.

So wouldn't it be more of a challenge to try and control lust as opposed to avoiding it all together?

I was only referring to genetical flaws which would lead to serious defects/illnesses in the offspring. If you've ever seen a child suffer from some physical deformation or have heard a child with cystic fibrosis tell you that he won't even live past 30 years, you don't wish any child to experience the same thing. Not even if their family gains so much 'love' from these children :disgust:

what has this thread turned into??
perhaps Elledan should start a new thread about all this philosophical stuff

back to the original thread... what's wrong with a tough girl? if you mean physically or mentally tough, i consider that a good asset. if you mean something else, then.....
also.. being a tough fighter doesn't mean you go around beating up people up all the time

I almost have a need to date a strong woman. This is because I draw off stength and become stronger myself. Normally, I am a quiet, shy guy. But around strong, confident people I gain confidence. Maybe this is weird... I don't know.

A woman who can take care of herself physically. Ego-wise it would look bad to some if she were to kick someones's ass who was picking on you or calling you names. Alot of men's ego's couldn't handle it. I'm not even sure if I could handle that...

I'd like the part of her being able to take care of herself just not herself and me...and I'd rather have a tough girl over one of these anorexic Ally McBeal wannabe's any day..

1) Elledan is not "weird". Thousands of monks and priests throughout the centuries devoted themselves to the very same philosophy. They chose complete control of their minds, hearts and bodies over the simple physical pleasures of a life with women. They chose Platonic pleasures of science and spirituality over the earthly pleasures of sex. It may interest you guys to know that Isaac Newton, one of the greatest minds ever, died a virgin. So Elledan, what you're doing has a long past precedent. You shoulod study this past precedent, and if this is the sort of life you want to lead, good for you.

2) Someone please explain to me what is funny about "OMG! Noooo! Aaiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!". Thank you.

[clarification]

Datalink7,

I think you misunderstood...he's not talking about a strong woman who will carry you thru hard times; he's talking about a STRONG woman who will physically bust you up and carry you out the back door and chuck your bloody, lifeless, skinny body in the dumpster. :Q OMG! No! Aiiieeeeee!

I'd hazard that it cannot be done. Basic human flaws that you've already mentioned (greed, lust, stupidity, etc) stand in the way. Like people who cannot possibly afford the cost of rearing more children, yet continue to do so. Or people who are so wont to have just ONE child, instead of adopting or some such, they take some crazy fertility drug and end up with 8 kids.

Dude...at The College of New Jersey, a required course is this "Society, Ethics and Technology" and in one lecture they show a film about this couple and they have a kid who has CF. Sucks for them. They go see a genetic counsellor who determines that they each carry CF and there's a 75% chance any kid they have will also have CF.
So what do they do?
Have another kid.
And the crux of the film is actually their wrestling with what should be a no brainer--whether or not they should have a 3rd child. Maybe I'm nuts, but after the misery of the first 2 kids, you'd think they'd want to spare their future children.

It's not even about the world being complicated, really. It is, in a way, the simplicity that makes it complex. It's nothing more than electrical impulses and chemicals. Yet somehow if you could reproduce exactly the physical reactions of the body, you still would not get the same experience.
Think of it this way. You can try to imagine me as a kayak surfer and attempt to live the experience. You can probably get a good impression of how it's done and what it feels like from reading, doing a virutal reality sim or some such. Imagining, role-playing it, even by sitting on the beach or in another boat watching it go on.
But no amount of passive experience could ever possibly prepare you for what it actually feels like to flip over backwards, or fly through the air, or drop down the face of the wave. The true experience cannot be simulated, nor can it be felt without actually doing it.

I can.

When fully focusing your thoughts during meditation, you can experience just about anything. Ever wondered what it feels like to be stabbed by a knife? I know, because I've felt it.

You may have felt it, you didn't experience it.
I feel like I'm in that movie. Oh, you LISTEN to Jimi, but you don't HEAR Jimi!
Have you ever actually been stabbed? Something tells me your reaction would be 100% different between actually getting stabbed and "simulating" getting stabbed through channeling your energy or thoughts.
Not that I'm advocating you go stab yourself
I guess I'm saying what I already said--you haven't truly experienced it, and you can't possibly experience many things without actually doing them, simply because when you have not experienced these things, and the simulation you have assembled internally is quite likely not 100% accurate.

But it's one of those things we'll never know for certain b/c it's your word against mine and we're both too inherantly stupid and stubborn to give either way....You'd have to try it--do it in your mind, and then do it for real. See if there is a difference or not

Oh well. Interesting discussion nonetheless.

Keep that $10 handy! haha

We now return you to your regularly scheduled "brute women."
