I have an oportunity, through some delicate trading & building, to trade the following:

1) Asus P3C-E i820 retail mobo
2) 1 - 128mb PC-800 rimm
3) Intel P3 1Ghz / 133 OEM processor

...& about $600 bones FOR:

1) Asus P4T i850 retail mobo
2) 2 - 128mb PC-800 rimms (256 total)
3) Intel P4 1.5Ghz / 100mhz quadpumped retail processor

Well, would you do it? BTW assuming your current case & PS are P4 compliant like mine...(Addtronics 8500 WTX & 400watt PS ATX 2.03 standard)

Hey, think about it. I can actually LOSE my i820 platform somewhat painlessly! $600 bones? No?

Cosidering that you will want to LOSE the i850 in a few months, don't do it. Intel has already said that the i850 isn't a long term solution and it won't be around for long.

no way.
the only people who should be touching p4's and 850's now are the dell/gateway/compaq/etc buyers who have no idea what comes in a system.

The next incarnation of the p4 has some promise, but this one is the practice run that those of us who know better should dodge.

fkloster,

I suggest checking out the performance reviews of the P4 and seeing why people are telling you not to get this system. The pentium 4 simply is not optimized to run on today's applications. Sure the memory bandwidth is HUGE and the P4's architecture will probably eventually be able to take advantage of this with the entrance of SSE2 optimized applications, but as the current state of hardware/software sits right now, the P4 simply is not a viable solution for anyone. Go check out the reviews on tomshardware.com or right here on anandtech and I think you will be surprised, if you haven't already done so. If you have already done so and you're still wondering whether or not to make this trade... well... yeah you probably should do it then.

I wouldn't...hell I'd sooner just get an i840 and another 128MB RIMM than an i850, 128MB RIMM and a P4 for $600...and I'd much sooner just spend the $600 on an i815E and 256MB of SDRAM and pocket the change

No seriously though stay where you're at...a 1Ghz P3 is hardly slow, and i820 + Rambus has more expensive alternatives, but it doesn't perform that badly compared to SDRAM + i815, it just costs quite a bit more, but you already have it so that's not an issue.

Just stay where you're at for a while, Socket423 isn't going to last long enough to make it worth putting it in your system.

fkloster: I seem to remember reading a while back that you payed around $1000 for 256MB's of PC800 RDRAM, if thats correct than I would do the switch simply to take full advantage of that huge investment. We all know that RDRAM was horribly crippled in a single channel PIII setup, and preforms better with the new P4 dual channel setup. So your investment went largly under utilized, and it could be worth the $600 to take full advantage of it. Although I think RDRAM is still not a good memory solution with its remaining latency issues and the P4's poor clock for clock preformance, but if I were you I would go for it simply to say that your invest payed off.

1) I already own the memory.
2) My case & PS are already P4 compliant.
3) $600 bones after trades is very cheap compared to market prices

Hey, someone around here needs to test one of these suckers out; it might as well be me! I'll take the grenade (fkloster just loves bieng AMD's punching bag)
