i need a new dvd player so i figured i would just get a xbox or ps2. i would like for it to be able to play home made dvds both + and - formats. also would like for it to be able to take the place of my cd player and play cdrs. i would need it to have component out and 480i is fine since my tv is not progressive compatable or even just svhs and digital audio out in either coax or optical. gaming is not a big deal since i game most on the computer, but a game every now and then would be nice. also need a remote.

i am leaning a bit toward the xbox to put linux on it, but wasn't sure how that would effect the usablity of it actually being an xbox.

so which should i go with?

they both are crappy as that...but as for modded units they rock

compared to just a cheap ass apex or sony dvd player? i don't have a hdtv and don't plan on buying one anytime soon, so all i need is 480i. is their dvd movie playing that bad?

for $100 cheaper, you'd be better off buying the phillips dvd/divx box.

Right now I say PS2. Its a relativley slow system but both are weak compared to a computer. So I go for the library. Theres a ton of neat PS1 games out there.

Thats actually the reason the Gameboy is still popular. You can play everything on it. I also stuck with my NES when Genesis came out. Game systems are about playing GAMES. And the NES always had better quality games, even though the graphics were dated.

But when the next gen consoles hit the shelves, I may have a different attitude.

my question is because i was looking to pay ~$150-$200 for a reasonably nice progressive scan dvd player that supports dvd-audio/sacd for the future, but thought this may be more useful. my home theater is basically a 55" tv, a denon dolby digital ex/dts es receiver, a sony and apex dvd player, a sony cd player and mirage speaker system. conservative, but it is in my bedroom and i live in a condo, but can eclipse over 100db (like when watching top gun, just watched the db meter bounce) with no audible distortiong and plenty of headroom because the room is not too big. i guess i am more a fan of video games than the high def audio since it hasn't really taken off. one more question, is the audio on the xbox games in true 5.1 dolby digital and using stereo surrounds? my setup sounds pretty good for a $1500 home theater and i have taken the time to tune it. when a plane flys from front left to rear right, the audio follows perfectly. now say i was playing gran turismo and a car is coming up behing me on the left, will i hear from the left rear speaker just like i experience in movies?

i have no problems modding either one, as i did it back with the old ps one, i had acquired the code and had a programme buddy burn me some of the chips...fun fun fun

In that case, get an Xbox.
