Been there done that. Twice. Four summers ago my wife and I crashed in a 15' camping trailer outside my parents house for 3 weeks while we waited for a house construction to finish up. Three summers ago we stayed for two weeks in their basement while we waited for our closing date. Doing that *really* makes you appreciate your place more when you finally get in.

As for me...I own, but also have a lot purchased that I'll be building on in a few years. Hopefully I won't be in the parents basement a third time on that one if has some scheduling issues :\

If you're paying a mortgage to the bank, do you count that as renting?

uh, whose name is on the deed of trust????

Doesn't matter. If you still owe the bank money, you're still renting it because if you stop making your payments, you're out on your butt.

why does there always have to be some smart ass that thinks they are so clever by posting crap like this? of course most people know that if you don't make payments on your mortgage, you will get foreclosed on (and actually, that would be called a 'default' in the industry, not 'renting').

where do you even get the notion that having mortgage is the same as renting? Note sure if you noticed but the process to rent an apartment/house is nowhere near the same as getting a mortgage. Is there paperwork filed out at the tax assessor's office identifying a renter as the property owner when a rental agreement is signed? do renters receive property tax bills in their name? are renters required to maintain a homeowner's insurance policy as part of their rental agreement?

\end of rant

If you own your house completely, try to stop paying property taxes and see how far that gets you. Does that mean everybody is renting from the government?

I think right now I owe more than the house is worth, so I'm gonna say the bank owns it for now.

even after you've paid off your house, you still have to pay property taxes. Stop paying your property taxes and see what happens. So you never really own your house by your definition

to answer the OP, I own a townhouse with my wife

You fail at ....everything.

I own my house. If I want to paint the walls, or knock down a wall, or rip out a bathroom, I can do that because it's my house.

I owe the bank money and the loan is secured by my house. If I stop paying my loan, the bank can take legal action and take my house from me, but that doesn't mean it's not my house.

I'm renting a house until I can save up some more for a down payment. I previously owned a house, but relocated so I had to sell it. Signed the lease on the rental and then a week later, I was given an offer on the house. The upside is that I planned to have both the rent and mortgage payment so now I have $1500/month to put away.

Own for 7 years (even before we married) and now looking to get another because we need more room... they said to us the avg stay in a house is 7 years and we thought nah... we'd be here longer than that. Nope. Problem is these houses are very plentiful and we're not sure how long it will take to sell.

I'm only 36 and my house is paid off. I'll be looking for a new house this summer. I need a ranch because my girlfriend walks with crutches and current house is a step monster.

Rent a small house on property with the landlord's big house. Granny unit, I guess.

Looking to buy in the next year or two, possibly.

Own, bought the house in '90. I have a 15 year mortgage, which will be paid off in about two years.

Well, property taxes are more of a yearly bribe to the extortionists we call government to leave us alone for another year.

But, basically, yes. Any places that has property taxes, all land is essentially leased from the government.

That's why I'm morally opposed to property taxes. Owning should mean owning.
