The reason rock is music and rap is not (ie: it's just "noise") is because rock actually requires a talent beyond the ability to talk. I'm still amazed people defend rap. Rap is just a def poetry jam of lesser quality and ingenuity with bass thumps in the background. Even though there hasn't been any good rock music in the past 10 years or so, there's never been good rap (note here how I omit the word "music").
Here's a test you can perform to determine what real music is:
---
Test 1:
1. Give a 10 year old a piece of paper and a pencil and tell him to write a poem
2. Have him to read the poem while beating on a wood piece of furniture
Test 2:
1. Get a 10 year old to gather a group of his friends and distribute amongst them the following instruments and equipment: at least one guitar, a bass, a set of drums
2. Give the first kid a piece of paper and a pencil and tell him to write a poem
3. Have all of the kids play their instruments while the first kid sings his poem
Test 3:
1. Sit a 10 year old down at a piano
2. Give him a piece of sheet music paper and tell him to write a song
3. Have him play his song on the instrument
---
The test that produces sounds better than the other two tests is not music.
Yes, I always judge what constitutes music by what 10 year olds can play :hmm:
Seriously, where do you people come up with these ridiculous hypothetical and arbitrary tests? And why are rock instruments the middle standard there? Why not add a
4th test:
Test 4:
1. Find a large group of 10 year olds (uhohs, I don't like where this is going )
2. Give them sheet music
3. Organize them by instrument type (percussion, string, brass, woodwind)
4. Assign a conductor
5. Have them start playing
The two tests that produce better music than the remaining two are not music.
Are you starting to see the flaw in your logic?
Also, rap =/= "def poetry". Some of the more complex rap accompaniment can include similar band music to rock or even full orchestration. Rap has all the qualities of any other genre of music. If you aren't familiar with the definition of music, you can brush up in a matter of minutes by basic musical theory. I doubt you have listened to a wide range of modern rap/hip-hop if you fail to see the parallels between what rock has done (grown with acquisition and fusion of other genres - you can't fail to see how rock "borrowed" heavily from classical music and jazz and other forms that preceded it) and what rap/hip-hop has done.
Just because you don't
appreciate it doesn't mean it isn't music. Learn the difference between appreciation and definition.
