Polyester mesh turning to dust

Hey folks, I have a strange one that I've never seen before.

My office chair (cheap staples purchase), has a black polyester mesh fabric on the bottom that covers the wood formed base. I've noticed that the mesh has turned brittle and literally turns to dust when i touch it. It makes a hell of a mess. I'm looking into various ways to get rid of it, but wanted to know if anyone else has seen this.

Also, any thoughts on the potential harmfulness of said dust?

Yikes. That sounds like a mess and a pain. Got photos?

I'm not a doctor/toxin specialist so can't say if it's safe, but any particulate or gas that isn't "fresh air" probably isn't good for you.

Just yesterday I threw out a bottle washer for the same reason. The foam had started to disintegrate. I've never heard of it happening with plastic strong enough to support weight but maybe it wasn't pure polyester.

I've also had plastic that becomes sticky to the touch after several years. My old Sony camcorder did that.

Does the sun shine directly on it, by any chance?

The mesh in on the bottom of the seat, so there is no direct sunlight. there could be some reflected light, but I have blinds that generally keep the direct light pointed up, not down.

As long as it's not implanted in your vagina or pelvic region, you should be good.

It could be just a prolonged period of exposure to air, your butt sweat, and body heat. Regardless, all signs point to poorly made chair.

P.S. My office chair is Staples branded too. Must be going on year 4 by now. The arm rests tore so I took them off and it's like a brand new chair -- except the cushion has been compressed and my ass can feel the metal hardware in the seat.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. The sun will eat the crap out of polypro lines on boats, for example. But OP said it was not in direct sun. So I suspect acidic butt sweat.
