Only a simpleton who didn't understand what he was reading would think that.

In my experience, only idiots with terrible taste in art like starship troopers, the book.

It's also amusing as a parody of world war 2 propaganda films. The actors are blocks of wood for a reason. If you think the humor was unintentional you weren't paying attention to Robocop 1 or Total Recall (all Verhoeven films).

If you want a fun listen, jump to the end of the cast/crew commentary on the DVD. Right at the end of the movie, the cast remembers about how Verhoeven made them read the book and that they weren't huge fans of it.

They then asked Paul what he thought of the book and his response was legendary.. something along the lines of: "Oh me? I only read the first few chapters then put it down.."

I have to agree. I am not a fan of the book at all. I thought the movie took a clever approach at looking at the book and its themes.
Heinlein had much better books out there, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress being a golden example.

With that said, he did give us the "space marine in a tech body armor" concept that pretty much dominates everything first person shooter. Scratch that, everything scifi video gaming. Name one Scifi video game in the last 15 years that wasn't a Starship Troopers knock off. (or at least contained one, I am looking at you Star Wars naysayers. Go ahead and tell me the Mandolorians didn't scream SST.)

I've read the book twice. It's terrible, fascistic drivel. The movie's satire of the material makes it superior to the book.

Uh no, its not fantastic, not terrible, and it damn sure aint drivel.
And the movie did not satirize the material because nobody who worked on the movie read the book or understood it. Paul Verhoven admitted as such.

You did not read the book. Maybe skimmed the pages at best.

Most people get that there was lots of satire in the movie, but it was still a shit movie. The idiot that wrote the article seems to think that satire is enough to make a movie good. It's not.
