When you're playing pool, how often do you have to chalk up your cue? And when I chalk it, should I be getting chalk on the edge of the cue or on the tip?

I agree with LOLyourface, I chalk up my cue nearly every shot unless I for some reason forget.

everytime... and the only reason you would need chalk on the edge is if you're not shooting straight and don't use the center of the tip to strike the cue ball

btw... please please please tell me there's at least one other person in this forum who knows that there are only 2 rules to racking 8-ball. the 8-ball goes in the middle, one stripe and one solid in the bottom corners.... there's NO SUCH RULE as the balls have to be alternating stripe solid strip solid etc... annoys the crap out of me and i eventually have to show people at the damn billiards website.

I don't chalk that often (nor have I played in a long time).

As far as chalking the edge, the edge *definitely* comes into play for English shots. That's precisely when miscues happen.

True. Many people don't know this either.

I chalk up my cue every shot. and make sure you get the entire tip.. if there is no chalk on the outside, you cant do spin, and also, if you are not the best shot, and accidentally hit the ball a bit on the outside, the extra chalk will make sure it still goes straight without a miscue.

rules must have changed then. When I played 15 years ago, every billiard book I ever read dictated alternating solid/stripes on the edge of the rack, with solids at the corners. Even the tournaments I played in had that as a rule.

Oh - and get yourself in the habit of chalking before every shot. Make it a habit and you'll never even think about it. Preferably moving the chalk on the tip, NOT sticking your cue into the chalk and turning your cue.

Agreed. But if he's asking a question about chalking, english shots are probably out of his league...

True. Many people don't know this either.

Most folks also dont know the proper way to rack 9-ball: 9 in the middle, 1,2,3,4 clockwise on the points of the diamond with the one at the top, the other four can be in any order.

And yeah, chalk before every shot.

Pretty much every shot...unless the shot is that easy that no lack of chalk will prevent me from making it...
