its probably a raitings thing.

Letterman probably figured that Michael Caine's fans would bail after his segment... so he kept him till later in the program to keep his fans watching.

He has a very long list of movies that are decent, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is but one of them. But I agree it is an enjoyable grifter movie.
