I never knew that until I went to college, and I my roomy would point at a Sprite, and say "Hand me a Coke."

Me: "???"

I've noticed that people that like "Soda" tend to be militant about it. If someone says "Hey, do you have any pop?" They go ballistic..

Ask a pop drinker for soda, and they'll pour you a glass, with no tirade.

Haven't met enough "Coke" drinkers to know their disposition... But if it tends to be southerners, I'm sure they're polite about it. Until you turn your back. (just kidding)

What I hate are restaurants that give you Pepsi when you ask for a Coke. Some places simply assume that if you ask for a Coke you'll take a Pepsi as an alternative without even asking you. I fvcking hate Pepsi. If I'm at a place that has Pepsi products I want a Mt Dew, not a Pepsi.

So you call Sprite Coke?

Wow. Crack is more widespread then I thought.

As a general term, it's soda, but I generally just say the brand-name (ie: I want a sprite, coke, pepsi, Dr Pepper, etc).

I say Coke when I'm referring to a soft drink in general and type isn't important, but if I'm ordering a drink, I'll specify.

Ex. Yeah, I just a Coke from downstairs.
Ex. I'd like a Sprite.

I guess I'm at a sweet spot in Erie, PA. I hear "soda" or "pop." Some of the 2L bottles simply say "soda pop." I had always learned to call it soda.
I've only ever heard Coke used to refer to Coca-Cola products. That, or one of the things used to make steel.

It happens in other cases as Schaedenfroh pointed out. Another example is some people refer to athletic shoes as tennis shoes. Doesn't matter if they're running shoes or basketball shoes or cross trainers - they're tennis shoes. Around here they're called sneakers. Tennis shoes are a very specific subset of athletic shoes. They have flat, usually white soles with small, thin treads.

I also find "soda" acceptable. Pop is the sound a balloon makes when it bursts. Or what some people might call their father.

lol, so true...i've lived in texas my whole life but have always called it soda (dad from all over the place, mom from cali). once i was at a restaurant and asked for a coke she was like "what kind?" i said "um...regular...?"

No one around here <deep south> ever said pop. Either it will be soda <any kind such as pepsi, dr pepper, mt. dew, etc.> or coke.

I'm in the south and have never done that or seen anyone order that way.
Why would someone make ordering a two step process? Just say what you want in the first place.

Agreeded, this is BS.

I've lived in the south my whole life and have never seen someone calling a DP a coke, or asking for it that way.

I ask for a coke, they either write it down or say "we only have pepsi, is that ok?".

If you want a sprite, you ask for a sprite.

Around these parts it's pop. And the only people who call it soda are the ones who also feel the need to spew a 20 minute lecture on why they call it soda and how everyone else is an idiot. I hate those people so much.

Tennessee. My wife is from Florida and lived in New Orleans and Atlanta. She's never heard people call DrP/Sprite and others "coke".

Must be a Texas thing.
