As a general term, it's soda, but I generally just say the brand-name (ie: I want a sprite, coke, pepsi, Dr Pepper, etc).

I also find "soda" acceptable. Pop is the sound a balloon makes when it bursts. Or what some people might call their father.

Why would someone make ordering a two step process? Just say what you want in the first place.
