3. Being out of $1000

I'd rather spend the money to get a water or better cooling set-up and get better results than trying this mod.

I would even sell my chip and try my luck with another CPU....

I did it to my Clawhammer. I had a venus 12, and it touched okay with a slight modification. I lost 7C to my load temps (63C to 56C) at 1.85vcore, but IMHO not worth it, because you can really fubar the proc. There are a couple of transistors right under the lid that you can accidently cut if your razor blade slips in too far, if you happen to get some weird compound under the lid you can seperate your core from the PCB, etc. I ended up re-sealing it with some AS5 and still got a 3C drop.

This has nothing to do with the topic, but Dagon41673, you have an exactly same setup as mine, well except a couple things, I thought it's funny.

Everything is the same except my RAM is OCZ Titanium instead of Platinum, and my monitor is Samsung 213T. Oh and I have 2 raptors. Heh..

P.S. What is your case? Mine is Lian-Li V1000.

I removed the IHS from my 3.06ghz northwood. It dropped my temps by about 3-4c. Not really worth the risk if you ask me, but the chip was going on 3 years so I figured I might as well see what happens.

How? I've never had an XP with an IHS?

...

It's the fact that it has an exposed die. -_-;;

That many of you crushed AXP cores? I was using massive thermaltake HSFs back in the AXP days and installed dozens of chips in my system without ever chipping or cracking a single one.

There's been so many post 'bout this here and at XS I decided to test it........... After removing the IHS it was clear that there was extremely good contact between the IHS and the core....... I gained 2 degrees at idle and the same at load. Obviously it had NO impact on the OC........ I would not recommend anyone do this and void their warranty..............

Regards

how do you know it made "good" contact? because it was difficult to remove?

from what i read and understand, they use some sort of adhesive stuff to bond the IHS to the core... so if that adhesive is the cause of the "good" contact then that's really not going to help heat dissipation that much...

i've read about people removing the IHS, lapping the bottom and top of the IHS, applying AS5 to the core, reattaching the IHS (with some thermal epoxy) and gaining some overclock and lowering temps by 5C's...

you are one of the first people i've ever heard of GAINING temperature after removing it.

Ive been working with Athlons XP's forever now, and ive never chipped or broken a single die.

Does anyone know if the Venice die is about the same? If it is, then screw it, im going to take off the IHS.
