Popups in XP?

Hey ogg...reading the thread would be a good thing.

Check out the first sentence in the the second paragraph of the original post.

I checked through the taskmanager listing you posted and nothing looked like it was out of the ordinary. Interesting...

Anyway, this is the service that these popups are exploiting. This OS messaging service is built into Windows 2000/xp and its used by administrators alot. This is not the same as MSN Messenger or other IM clients. All you have to do is disable the service..........

If youre the administrator of your machine, no sweat.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools
>Services
You are looking for the Messenger service.
Read the Description......See Im right.
Now Rightclick>Properties and dont just stop the service in the startup type: box but disable it from restarting after reboot..........

Well, now I just checked my computer after a full night and I didnt have a single popup.. Maybe I got rid of them at some point? Hopefully they wont come back

Not to mention he provides a screenshot of said popups and it looks nothing like a messenger service popup.

You can try asking someone over at Call For Help, Leo is pretty good at these kinds of things. Almost always has a solution.

Well.. It's now been like 2 days since I've recieved one. I wish I knew how I got rid of them, but I've done so many things that I'm not sure which one of them worked.

It was probably the messenger service, all of us have seen this before.

Well.. The messenger service has been off since the day I got the computer and I was still getting them. And if you looked at my ads they were clearly now from the Messenger service

I would suggest you d'load "HiJackThis" and CWShreader Run a Scan ONLY with HiJackThis. Do NOT "fix" anything. Head over to the DSLReports Security Forum and ask someone to look over the results report. If you nuke the wrong stuff, you could end up with a BSOD. Good Luck!
