Condoms don't protect against herpes, and it's nonfatal.
There's a little more nuance to that:
"Correct and consistent use of latex condoms can reduce the risk of genital herpes, because herpes symptoms can occur in both male and female genital areas that are covered or protected by a latex condom. However, outbreaks can occur in areas that are not covered by a condom."
-CDC
But this is the advice I follow:
The surest way to avoid transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, including genital herpes, is to abstain from sexual contact, or to be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected.
the DC translation:
Only fuck your wife; and make it clear that if she cheats on you that's OK and understandable, not a big deal: so she should be honest. But if she infects you with a VD you will fucking murder everyone she cares about and then slowly torture her to death.
80% of the time, it works every time.
