I found a pretty interesting article comparing the 350Z, the BMW M3 SMG 2, the Porsche 911, and the Z06.

The Z06 pretty handily beats out the competition, although the 350Z is a great value.

How does the Boxster S compare to the 911? I'd imagine since the 911 is a higher-end car it would perform better.

Nurburgring time for a standard 911 Carrera:
Horst von Saurma (D) Porsche 911 (996) C2 02'. 320 PS. 1467 kg
2001-10-02, sport auto Supertest 20.600 km 149.215 km/h 8:17:000

The Z06 would have to be 23 seconds faster each lap than the base C5 to match the standard 911. Seems unlikely.

Also, the 911 Targa is a particularly poor choice for a track comparison considering the extra weight that its special roof adds.

The info you post is interesting, but I'd prefer to see a more neutral party doing the testing. Seems to me that a German guy driving on a German track would prefer a German car.

I don't know that he's biased, but I wouldn't want to put all my faith in one source. Also, does it state what modifications those cars had?

I wonder what it is about those tracks that favors certain cars? Do you think it's the track itself or is it a coincidence, maybe the driver that was doing the testing felt more comfortable in a certain car?

In any event, even if we can't come to a conclusion, it would at least disprove the notion that the Vette is a "quarter mile car"

I should mention that the Nurburgring is also the track that Porsche uses for testing and that Porsche tends to use Nurburgring to tune its cars. I'm not surprised that the 'Vette beats out the 911 on an American track, nor am I surprised that the 911 beats the 'Vette on a German track. Companies optimise for the conditions in which they feel that their products will be used.

Interesting. So it's sort of like how in computer hardware, companies sometimes optimize their products to do well in a specific benchmark, and therefore it's no surprise to see a product do well in one benchmark but fall short in another.

So our comparison is beginning to get into specifics now, the cars are beginning to show that they're good on certain tracks.

Exactly, it's all about tradeoffs.

Also, when you stop to think about it, the person who is in the market for a Boxster isn't really going to consider a Corvette any more than the person who is in the market for the Corvette would consider a Boxster.

cant believe the silly responses in this thread.

i'm going to a dealer auction wednesday to look at a few S's (2000-2001), I've been looking for 2 months now and been doing a LOT of research.

You want pure power? don't get a boxster. you want a car that will handle on rails, has a beautiful sound, looks great, and has pretty decent power, get a boxster.

don't get a new one unless you've got plenty of money. a used 2000-2001 S will run 32-36k. a base will run around 27-28. don't get anything older than 2000 as the 1999's had a 2 year warranty and the 2000's and on have a 4 year warranty. the S came out in 2000 as well, so did the conversion from 2.5l to 2.7l for the base model. (about 17hp increase).

boxster s's 0-60 time is around 5.6-5.8. your other options are a 350z, g35 coupe, wrx, s2000, audi tt, z3/z4. IMO none of them compare to the styling and handling of the boxster.

you want a z06? you're gonna have to buy a new one and pay $15k more. the only other car i was looking ta is a 2001 m3 coupe, which is out of my range (39-40k).. nothing else holds a candle i think. s2000 is a honda, audi is slow and sloppy, z3 is junk, m roadster is ok but styling sucks, z4 is nice, but its 'almost as good as a boxster' ive read, plus its brand new.. 350z is a great choice but like the wrx, i dont fan the styling and whatnot enough to spend the money.

go for it, you wont regret it if you pick one up i guarantee. if you have a little extra money 99 carrera's are going for 45-50k. and dont overpay, the market is loaded cause the 'car market' sucks right now, cars are depreciating, especially more expensive ones.

anyway, my 2 cents, if you have any questions about the boxster feel free to PM me, i can probably answer anything you got.

oh, and for those saying its a fake porsche, grow up. too many jealous around here

I agree. We all know that the only "fake" Porsche is the Cayenne

The only thing the vette guy is forgetting is that the boxster is a porsche, a very positive thing. The vette, on the other hand is an american car, a big negative.

If you are capable of objective thought, a name by itself means nothing. A name is just a name. The vehicle behind the nameplate is the only think that matters.

When you say that being a Porsche is a good thing and an American car is a big negative, you are simply showing your bias towards those things before you even objectively compare them.

or how a porsche with 80000 miles can look spotless and a vette with the same will probably be falling apart..

Dont forget than part of having a car if the "flashyness", a porsche is much better at than than any american car will ever be. Also the porsche will be more reliable and will have a superior resale value because of the name. Also driving in a porsche brings you respect, not driving a vette.

In the latest JD Powers reliability ratings, Porsche did do better than Chevrolet, but they were far behind Lexus, Infinity, Acura, Honda, and Toyota.linky

They are closer to Buick in reliability than they are to Honda.

And as far as appeal goes:

But what does J.D. Powers know, anyway? There are only a world renown independant information firm... they're not an internet forum "know it all" like you.

But arent you comparing porsche's to vette's? What you are saying about toyota and honda is irrelevant.

Uh, as a Porsche owner I can state with certainty that the people who only respect me because I drive a Porsche are the people I desire to bludgeon to death with my tyre iron. Let's be rational here, only a child would base his opinion of a person on the brand of car they drive.

Never knew that the Z4 was on par with a Boxster, all the more reason for me to like that car...at first I hated it but after seeing a few in person it grew on me...

Marshall, you need to chill...I said in my response to you that I had no raw data and that I also was a fan of American muscle yet you continue to be an ace hole and give me a hard time...classy.

I like the vette, and I am impressed with the figures you posted, but like Zimmer said when I see you pull those kind of numbers in that car then we can talk, I agree that it would be easier for the every day driver to manuver a Porsche over a vette around high speed corners or windy back roads..mid engine cars just have a surer (?) feel to them, with the high torque rwd I would worry more about hitting it comming out of a corner and having the rear end break free.

That said, the top two "would buy another car of the same make" brands according to CarTalk are Porsche and Honda. Entirely different rating system to be sure.
