Port Forwarding a DVR system

Hi and thanks for looking.

I recently installed a video surveillance system for a friends warehouse. It is a Q-see Net DVR complete set with cameras and dvr from costco. Installation and getting it running was pretty straight forward and it works as advertised.

Now my friend wants to be able to look in on his office from his house, etc. So I am in the process of getting it to go and can't seem to figure out port forwarding and the address I would need to use to access the DVR from a remote computer. I am ok with hardware, but have very little networking skill so any help will be greatly appreciated. I've been researching and trying different things all weekend now and I can't get it to go.

I can access it on the local network by typing in the devices address. I can see what the camera sees in real time (though only one cam at a time). I think I have all the information I need, but I am not sure where to input it. I need to be able to access it from another computer in a different city and would ideally like to access it from anywhere. So I need to know what the address to get to a remote computer/dvr looks like. I assume it's all numbers and I might have had the right combo (ip address/devices adress) or be totally off.

I've been to portforwarding and found the router that he has in his office.

log into the 2wire and forward whichever port you use to access the DVR (typically port 80 or 443, but it can vary) to the DVR's ip address.

for ease of use, register him with a dynamic dns service like dyndns.com. if he doesnt have a static address from the ISP, you may want to install their optional software to keep the dynamic hostname address up-to-date.

now, when navigating to his WAN ip address from the outside, the router should forward the necessary ports to the DVR system.
