Portable air conditioners

I'd like to hear some opinions on those stand-alone air conditioners from anybody who has bought one. My windows don't lend themselves for a typical window mount and aside from an in-wall mount this is my only option.

The unit I have in mind has 50 db noise rating ... will I still be able to sleep with it running or is that loud for an air conditioner ?

I had one, they were loud where I would want to sleep in the farthest corner away from the unit, but still doable. I later returned it because my circuit breaker would keep going off when the AC and the compressor on my wine fridge would turn on at the same time. I blame the old wiring in my house.

My parents have one and it works really well. It's loud at it's highest setting but you can sleep when it's set at low.

50db is middle of the pack for noise. You can find a lot quieter if you spend more, but you can find louder too. How you'll be able to sleep depends on your noise sensitivity. It wouldn't bother me at all as long as the noise is consistent.
