Portable Air Conditioning Unit

Alright, summer is approaching and my room at home is starting to get pretty hot (it's always a good 5-10° warmer than any other room in the house). I was wondering if there were any small, portable AC units we could get that can cool just a single room? Something like an AC version of a space heater...do these things exist? Any recommendations?

I don't know how well they work. I'd get a window unit if you can, you're bound to have more selection.

Yoww, those are pretty expensive. I wish I could get a window unit but with my windows (they are like full-wall windows, which is why my room gets so hot) it would take a lot of work to put an AC unit into it.

How would something like this work? It's relatively cheap and small, will it be enough to cool a room?

Depends where you live. For a swamp cooler aka evaporative cooler to be effective you need a humidity level of less than 25-30%. If not, it will just blow moist air into the room.

I'd get a window unit, they sell partitions that you can install to make up for the gap in the window.

Bah, here in northeastern Ohio the humidity is always like 80%.

I'll see what I can do about a window unit. Or maybe there's a way to route more air from our central AC to my room.

Portable units work ok but you may have to modify it to get the most out of it. By default they suck lot of air outside the house, which causes hot air to come back in from cracks and other places. What you want to do is figure out where the condenser intake is and build an air box around it with a pipe going outside. Basically the way they work is the heat created by the compressor and condenser coil is blown outside through the pipe. so what you want to do is have an intake too, and make that part of the unit a closed system.



This is what I did with mine and it doubled the efficiency. It will actually cool down the whole upstairs of the house.
