<< What would be the purpose of having PAL playback on a US region 1 only player? >>

To playback PAL VCD on US' NTSC only TV. Nothing to do with DVD's region code.

for us poor college students, small units like these are easy to carry over to a buddy's house to watch dvds. or when you go travel, you can plug this into your hotel tv.

why get a big bulky player when you can get the same thing for smaller?

i got a similar unit in Taiwan, and it even has dolby digital and no region coding. plays vcds, mp3s, all the good stuff. For my unit's cost of $107, it's well worth the convenience, as well as features.
it plays dvds that my pioneer dvd player doesn't want to play

if this unit were similar, then i think this is a great buy for $80 buckaroos

I don't have much experience with the whole 'region codes' issues.
I'm pretty sure that it deals with the ability to copy DVDs though.
Since I've got this thing, can someone tell me how I can tell if I even
need to hack it. How do I know if the region code is 'standing in my
way from doing whatever?'

Have those that got this player had any of their mp3 discs skip, particularily songs encoded in VBR?? My current home one keeps skipping on mp3z and movies so if this doesn't skip on either I'm in like Flynn.

As soon as I saw this thread, I had placed the order (with 20% off for the first time buyer) along with a battery charger. Any one using this DVD Player ?? I did not find any user opinions in <A href=http://www.cnet.com>cnet</A> or any where else. I did used several search engines (found only one for sale for $129 at <A href=http://www.smartbargains.com>smartbargains</a>.

If this thing works out to be good, I can return the Philips MP3/CD player I bought from fry's last Sunday.

Thanks for the post, anyway.

For those of you that are having problems with mp3 files playing on this unit or any other unit.....what program did you use to make the cdr mp3s? I had bought 2 different brand dvd home decks that said they play mp3 files and both cut the files into MANY parts. Yes, it played them but with pauses inbetween the splits! Anyway, i just found out the reason is because i used Direct CD. It seems that if you use any cdr program that uses Packet Writing that this will happen. I've got all my cdrs done with packet writing! Does anyone know of a brand/model of dvd player that will play packet written mp3 files? I really don't want to have to go and redo all my mp3 cdrs becuase of this. I was thinking of getting this unit, but am afraid it won't play my cdrs. Luckily the 2 home decks i purchased were from my local area so it was no problem returning them. Walmart has a great return policy!

OK, I just ordered one. I was looking to buy a CD-MP3 player for my car and this was only about $10 more. I hope it's not junk. For those of you who bought one...

It appears most Lasonic home dvd players support SVCD as well as VCDs, but I couldn't find much information on this one. Can anyone confirm if this thing will play SVCDs?

What is the model number?

It seems pretty good. I've seen those car flip-down screens for about $100 on fleebay, so for under 200, you get a car dvd player for the kids for long trips.

I'd like to get one, but I'm too poor though.

Ok, this is to confirm SVCD playback. I posted in the nerd-out, vcdhelp, and some other forums asking if this thing could play it but nobody ever replied except for some poor guy saying "I was thinking the same thing. Anyone know if it plays SVCD's?"

So I received my order today and was just hoping it would.

YES. It does. Even with menu structures. I have only tried simple menus so far. No complex ones yet.

And the Lasonic site doesn't really help. It says it has optical and coaxial digital out which it doesn't. But I'm fine with it since this thing was tiny and cheap. I'm basically using it as a VCD/SVCD player and my Xbox as my DVD Player.

It even has a remote control, which gives it a good plus over using my laptop to play DVDs. Might have to get one.

Good find.

iahk, have you tried to play dvd's or mp3's on it? If they don't skip I'm up for this one. Use it at home til I get a cooler one and then stick this bad boy in the car.

Thanks

Yep, they both play pretty good. Although I haven't tried any vbr mp3s but I would guess they would play too. Awesome deal for less than $100.
