Portable gaming alternatives to laptop? New IGPs coming?

I have a situation where I need to be in a very dull place for 12+ hours a day. I'm allowed to have reading material, movies, laptops, etc. to make sure I'm alert and on-call. They do not provide me with a computer to use.

Since there is NO objection to my gaming on my so-so laptop, I half-wonder what some alternatives to gaming laptops I could do...

There are the all-in-one machines, but I don't think I could go as far as a SFF system and monitor, despite having all the parts around the house that would go great in one. (And no one seems to want to BUY those parts!)

A true gaming laptop is just so dang expensive... very hard to justify.

I have a 19" monitor as well... but I suppose I'd need quite the bag to lug that kind of stuff around. Probably not a great idea.

(Currently have AMD 4500M w/ Radeon 7640G.)

Of course, I'd be happy to hear of amazing new Intel or AMD IGP's being right around the corner! Didn't Intel have something coming soon?

I have a headless SFF computer I use with Steam in-home streaming to game on my ultrabook.

Just make sure you have good hardware encoding in the host computer.

[edit] dang... the laptop w/ dedicated graphics I was going to trade for had fans about to die... backed out.


I wonder if a VERY SFF rig with AMD APU will still outperform any laptop IGP? I should just bite the bullet and get a new high-end lappy.

It bugs me that even "high end" laptop graphic solutions can barely keep up with an old & cheap Radeon 7770 like I have lying in my extra parts bin. An ultra SFF with the best AMD APU I can throw in it would be way cheaper than a $1000+ laptop and wouldn't take up much space. The right sized backpack could easily carry it, the 19" spare monitor I have, a reduced-size keyboard and mouse. A little more setting up, but cheaper and more reliable (as in easier to repair or replace bits.)

...now to dig into some ultra-SFF FM2+ options!

It would make sense from a financial point of view, but where it's socially acceptable to bring a laptop somewhere it's... weird... to bring in a 19" monitor and regular keyboard, etc.

If I wanted to go ultra SFF anyway, the AMD A10 7850k or 7700 (cooler) would be the best bet... there are some BRIX with Iris Pro, but they're the same price as a gaming laptop! Forget that!
