Valve's announced that the PS3 version of Portal 2 will be quite chummy with its PC and Mac cousins come April 20, revealing full cross-platform compatibility: PS3 users can chat with Steam users, play multiplayer with them and even partake in cloud-based storage. The disparity between the PS3 and PC/Mac versions appears to be about non-existent now.

Additionally, those who pick up the PS3 game are ensured a free voucher for the Steam Play version of the game, should they link their PSN and Steam accounts. "We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases," said Valve's Gabe Newell.

Uh, hell yeah! Free copy on Steam with purchase, Steam integration, multiplayer with PC? Fuck yes.

Yeah this is pretty awesome. Gabe Newell wasn't kidding about Portal 2 PS3 being the definitive console version.

I'm excited to see what the future holds. Cloud-based storage on consoles as a standard feature would be great.

I saw that this morning as well. Good move on their part. Now just let me play most of my Steam library on my PS3 and I'll be set

There has to be more to this...

So I can buy the PS3 version, use my voucher on the PC, sell my PS3 game, and still keep the game on Steam/PC?

Since PS3 version syncs with Steam, could be linked via same DRM it is on actual Steam, whereas you buy it, you keep it. That, or once you deactivate your copy on your PS3, it removes the PC copy..? Something like that possibly?

I don't have a PS3... Do you have to activate games on PSN? I was not aware of that.

They said it was a voucher. Console games have done things like this before... Darksiders came with a code that activated a downloadable copy of Red Faction Guerrilla IIRC, and nothing stopped you there. I doubt there will be much to stop you from just using the PC voucher and trying to sell the used game to somebody else. There may be a bigger price disparity between the two versions, or they may decide to do a combo pack separate from the stand-alone PS3 version, but I think there will be the standard $10 higher price in the PS3 version and an included code for the PC version.

Wonder if this will mean no resale on the PS3 version, since it'll be linked to a Steam account.

I'm 100% in favor of keys tying console games to a user account, so this wouldn't be a bad thing IMO. We've had it on the PC for years, and I've never had an issue with it.

That is how the PSN works, you log in with your credentials and you can download your stuff to any other PS3 (I think up to 5 times, but I may be wrong).

I have my stuff on my roommate's PS3 since it is the only one in the house, but before I moved in, I had my own. And both of us can access it from either account. So from mine I can play my own save file of 'Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness: Chapter 1' (mostly because I like the name), and on his account he can play 'Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty'.

It's cross platform play. It's really not much different than Steamplay (buy one game and use for both your mac and pc) other than the PSN ID being involved. Your steam and PSN accounts will be tied to the Steam Cloud so I'm sure you can only be using one copy of the game at one time. Who knows, if more game publishers get involved with this concept Steam could really take control of game distribution. I'm predicting that it sells $50 on Steam for the PC version only and $60 for the PS3, stinging you an extra $10 for the cross platform feature.

There had better be a hell of a lot more content than the original for that price...

Valve has stated that both the single player and the co-operative campaigns are about each twice as long as the original campaign in Portal.[13][19] Erik Woplaw estimates each campaign is about six hours long.[17]

$55 (with tax $59) at Amazon with $20 credit right now. (Wal-Mart has a similar deal too)

If they start adding PS3 support like they did with Mac support for other Valve titles that would indeed kick ass. Be able to choose PS3 or PC/MAC and load up Left 4 Dead 2 or Half-Life 2

Which I was considering picking up Orange Box on PS3 (can be found for $5-$10) so I could rip through the games on my big TV. I do own em them all on PC. However I hear it has some issues in the port. Enough to piss Gabe Newell off to bad mouth the system for awhile and skip Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 on it and such. Now he's changed his mind on the hardware with Steam on the PS3.

That & if cross steam games like Orange Box on PC & PS3 do happen. Will people that bought the PS3 port get updates or only people that own it on the PC would get it on PS3 too? If it does happen that is....

Very interesting stuff.
