I dunno, glad he finally came around to the correct view regarding the PS3.

Not that I'd ever buy a Valve game on a console, ever. Those belong on my PC. But I'm glad they are taking titles on PS3 seriously now, after what they did for the Orange Box.

But how could you go wrong when you get the PC version and the PS3 version for cheaper than the PC version :hmm:

I'm still curious how exactly this will work. I'm assuming they don't want you to be able to lend out your PS3 disc and still be able to play the game on your PC online while the person with your disc is also online.

It will be like any Steam game. It will be tied to your account. I am sure....

Yes, but then what stops you from just selling the PS3 game? If you can sell the PS3 game for $40 after using a code or whatever, you've effectively gotten all of the money back (given you jumped on Amazon's deal for $54.99 + $20 credit).

Like selling any steam game on disc. If you were to purchase it at a second hand store and the key was tied to another steam account your S.O.L.

It's highly unlikely the PS3 game has a (basically) CD key.

I'm thinking when you pop in the game it asks for a Steam account. Even for Single Player. That's the way Steam is on PC.

Well see though....

Has there been any more news on this? Don't want to buy the ps3 version just to find out something changed last minute.

Nothing new. It's the same ol story, to get the PC version you'll need to link your Steam account to your PSN login. I mainly pay FPS's on PC but am getting this on PS3 because I get a free version on PC.

You need to activate the Steam on your PS3 through Portal 2. You can't just gift it.

I doubt you can gift it anyways.

I think. So I don't know 100% but I think the PS3 version links to your Steam account like any PC steam game does. I think you have to link it first to play it, even single player which also unlocks it on PC.

It just uses PSN to let other PSN users know your playing but it mainly uses Steam.

Well see when it comes out.

So all these people that think they can buy the PS3 version & get the PC version and sell the PS3 version will just be selling coaster copies. Like selling any steam disc game used as you need to attach it to a Steam account.

That's what I don't believe, that they would make you log into Steam to play Single Player on the PS3. Sure, you have to do it on the PC, but we're used to it... the PS3 doesn't require an active connection to play anything (but an online-only game).

It just doesn't seem like something I'd expect, but who knows. But then again... what would the actual disc be? The disc is the sort of "serial number" as it proves you have a physical copy.

I'm guessing the game will require Steam for all multiplayer, but only the disc for single player. You will receive a code with the game to be able to tie your account to Steam. It's a one-time use code. If you sell the disc, you can no longer play it on the PS3 (since you need a disc) and whoever buys it can only do SP.

That's my guess at least. In my opinion, none of the methods are very clean.

Yeah it doesn't make sense to have the PS3 copy be useless after it is "used," though I certainly agree with them starting down that path. Anything to hurt Gamestop

At E3 last year, we learned that Portal 2 on PS3 would mark the debut of developer Valve's much-lauded Steam service on consoles, but we left wondering what that meant, exactly. Over the last ten months, we've managed to piece together a pretty comprehensive set of features; however, today, Valve issued a short press release that runs down a list, and even offers some new details.

Of course, Portal 2 on PS3 will offer cross-platform matchmaking with Steam friends, Steam achievements (in addition to PS3 trophies), and Steam Cloud support to save co-op and single-player game progress on PS3. Note: "Game saves and progress from a PlayStation 3 are incompatible with other platforms."

To access all these features, Portal 2 on PS3 will feature the familiar Steam overlay, giving players a quick way to access "both PSN and Steam friends," for text chats (and we presume voice chats), profiles, friend requests, and game invites. In order to access all these Steam-y features, you'll need to link your PSN account with your Steam account. Don't have a Steam account? You can make one "with the click of a button," Valve promises. And if you're wondering how that "free" Steam Play version on Mac or PC will work, Valve says, "linked players of the PS3 version of Portal 2 can also access and play their copy of Portal 2 on any PC or Mac by redeeming an in-box access code on their computer."

If this works as well as we think it will, we don't think we're alone in suggesting that all games ever should do this. Check out the associated Steam support page for plenty more in the way of details (and even some pics).

I think Portal 2 sounds awesome. But I don't have a computer that could run it, so I wonder if I would be better off getting it on Xbox since I have a few friends on there getting it.

So if you buy the PS3 version you get a PC copy you don't need ?

While it's cool you get it, what's the point ? You don't need it to play online because you have the PS3 version.

I guess it's good for using on a laptop.

btw, best deal seems to be from Best Buy. pc version is $35 and you get a $10 gift card and theoretically a $10 gamer reward if you join that.

The PS3 and xbox versions have the same deal but are $45. The console versions might be cheaper if you consider trade in value.

Amazon has the beat deal going on currently, $5 off the game plus $20 Amazon credit.

It all depends on what you prefer and where you have friends. I have no ps3 friends, so I'd want to play co-op on the PC but I may want to play the single player on my TV. What would have made it perfect is if the saves were compatible on each system and synced to the Steam cloud, then you could just bounce between whichever version you wanted and pick up where you left off when you last played it. Since that's not the case it's not AS useful, but for some it's just enough to pick the PS3 version over the 360 version. I have a PS3, 360, and gaming PC and would pick the PC version of this only if I had to. But I don't have to choose so now I can decide how I want to play it.
