Started playing on unlock and got about 6 hours into it.
Having a great time. Upto stage 8, but stage 7 got me near the end for over 30 minutes, but stage 7 just felt long. So many felt like the design was "throw some objects around and forget about making a path).
Some of the enviroments have definitly got me thinking that a lot of time was spent on the game (the section after "the fall" comes to mind).
I'm taking it easy and listening to all comentary and looking/reading all posters.
I have read that some players have finished single in under 5 hours, but while I can see it being possible, you really need to skip every a lot of good stuff (ie: turret stage re videos, someone got bored creating that)
Though getting my mouse "speed" set correct at the start took a while. Until I relised the game had set "accelleration" to max. Stupid default feature.
Have not tried co-op yet, but want to do it with a competant friend and not a random.
Only gripe have have is portals and lasers. The lasers are present before the portal completly forms.
Oh, and one more little bonus: those who found every secret "potato" hidden within the Potato Sack games reportedly got a "Golden Potato" award -- and the complete Valve game collection. Including Portal 2.
If you bought the valve complete pack from before I don't believe that includes all FUTURE Valve releases... that'd be silly. People who found all the secret potatos get the old valve complete pack plus portal 2, which is the NEW valve complete pack.
If you want. I think the first Portal is an awesome game. I played it over again this past week and it took me less than 2hrs to complete it. For a first playthrough maybe 4-5hrs to complete it since everyone says the puzzles in the first are more challenging than the second. There's really no big storyline to speak of but I've read that you won't get some of the jokes and easter eggs if you haven't played the first.

Hahah sorry, what? "If you want?" More like absolutely friggin' yes. Just because Portal 2 is out, gives you no excuse to ignore Portal 1, one of the greatest games to come out in recent years.

What does this have anything to do with what was quoted? Are you saying he should play all the HLs before Portal? That's absurd.
Anyway, Portal 2 is thus far fantastic as I hoped. A few chapters in to the single player and I'm a huge fan of the new mechanics I've run into (lasers and light bridges). The humor is top notch and I'm excited to try co-op some time with somebody else who hasn't played it yet.
Finished the game last night (don't worry no spoilers ahead). Fantastic game! Took me 8 hours to complete and I wasn't rushing at all, so maybe it could have been a little bit longer, but that doesn't take away from it being a superb game. Easily the GOTY, and arguably the best game released since the original Portal.
I haven't tried the Co-op yet, but I'd love to give it a shot with someone who hasn't given it a go either.
Took me 3 hours to figure out my old Steam account, I don't play many PC games but loading steam and buying Portal 1 was the fastest way to get going. I played the first 10 levels and I can't believe I've never tried it.
Finished it last night too. All I can say is "wow". (Nothing too spoilerish ahead)
The scale of everything has been jacked up a ton, they obviously put a lot of work and time into this. Very enjoyable, I did get "stuck" at a few bits, took me maybe 20 minutes to figure out some of the puzzles. Maybe it was because I was somewhat sleepy towards the end, but it seemed like some of the levels didn't have the same level of direction as the original (there were bits were it wasn't very obvious what was supposed to be done).
Most valve games its quite easy to see your goal and you then figure out how to get there. Some levels in Portal 2, the exit is so far away that the path ahead is confusing.
Also, the difficultly of some of the puzzles are (in my opinion) quite a bit harder than in Portal 1. But I think a lot of that is due to the wide array of puzzle elements they introduced. Thankfully even failing to figure out the correct path is still fun.
Also I felt like the large number of new puzzle elements detracted slightly from the game, I think there were too many new things introduced and it felt like they were adding things for the sake of adding them. And you didn't get enough time to fully try out all the new ways to use them.
And my final gripe
I was hoping to have an epic escape the facility using my own brains and puzzle solving skills, not take an elevator ride
Now for the good stuff. Everything that made Portal 1 fun is back. Puzzles, witty dialog, and tons of fun. The graphics are beautiful, I am sure there are titles with better ones, but things are looking very good. There is incredible attention to detail, I love how the facility itself is a character in itself. The destruction animations are stunning. You really get a sense of scale, and its rather overwhelming at times. There's a wide variety of settings that makes for a nice change of pace.
Voice acting is top notch and is a pleasure to listen too. I'm looking forward to playing CJ sections again just to hear those bits of dialog again. The music is also fantastic, I love the sound elements used during different parts of the puzzle solving. I just wish the smooth jazz lasted longer
Basically, Portal 2 is Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. I'm looking forward to trying out the co-op. But for right now I'm going to go through it again with the commentary on, I always love those.
I thought Portal 2 was decent. Portal 1 was fresh, Portal 2 not so much (though they did add more stuff like lasers and gel). I thought the cave levels were a bit too long, and I'm disappointed they didn't stick in more Half-Life references.
What I really dislike is how Valve went the path of CoD by charging $45 for a 5 hour single-player game. At least CoD has multiplayer for replay value...
