well unless it was planned from the beginning it looks like Valve realized how disappointed we'd be if it didn't unlock on the 18th

unlocks are progressing super fast now that the starch-based power cells have been engaged

this whole thing was a stupid waste of time for consumers...valve of course raked in the cash while providing no benefit whatsoever to the people by releasing it a negligible amount of time earlier

It's practically a scam and if you ask me a pretty cruel thing to do to your customers.

If you paid the money for these games on the sole premise that it would net you maybe a day or two early release of Portal 2, then you are the one at fault. When this thing started, it screamed of a cash grab that only the idiotic would fall for.

That is true.

Remember that Valve fanboys are the same people who pay real-life money for hats in Team Fortress 2. They're pretty much the same as Farmville addicts, so I really don't feel sorry for anyone who bought a bunch of games solely because they thought they might get Portal 2 early.

Just enjoy your games, guys.

Some of the games in the Potato Sack are really good games though, so don't overlook them just because of this promo. I already had Amnesia - Dark Descent, and I picked up The Ball on Friday for $10. Both are really solid indie titles and worth a look if they are the type of game that appeals to you.

Aside from anything else, it's cool to see that Valve works with indie devs to help them make a name for themselves. The Ball DLC even has a Portal look to it, complete with GLaDOS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRMXNnFdfnI

I didn't pay for it...I just did the things for the games I already own. I just assumed that they would release it somewhat earlier if people actually did the "challenges". What is the point of this whole thing? I rarely complain about valve and enjoy using steam on a daily basis. This one just kinda left a nasty taste in my mouth. Yes it is my personal opinion that it is sorta stupid to pay to release the game early, but that is the promotion they claimed to be doing and it turns out its basically a lie. I originally admired the ideas and work that went into creation the promotion, but after seeing how it played out it is just an elaborate scam to rake in some more cash.

the original release time was 10am EST.

lets say Valve releases at Midnight EST instead

would the community be satisfied?

I usually go to bed about midnight. so I would want 11pm to feel like I got any benefit at all.

So people are seriously throwing money at Valve to release the game less than 24 hours early? I swear to god, people are so fucking retarded I just don't have words for it. Wow.

I got the potatoes for Defense Grid, but I already owned it. I thought it was an awesome promotion, it felt super fun to be part of this larger push towards getting the game released. But I played at my own leisure, if someone on the other hand bought the pack and invested their whole weekend into this in hopes of having it unlock... that's their own fault. Definitely not Valve's.

By the way, I just checked the GlaDOS site and it appears the "Potato Overclock" is in effect because the potatoes are counting down and the bars are filling VERY rapidly. I would imagine we're an hour or two away from playing some Portal 2.

I got the potato deal before this stupid promotion even began because I thought it was a good deal on a bundle.

If you played the games in the bundle hoping it would speed up the release and it didn't, it is probably because not enough people played them. If you thought it was going to be like some sort of solo unlock for just you, then maybe you should have done research because this appears to be some sort of world event where everyone contributes resources to unlocking it, like ahn qiraj.

Basically, some of you are just mad because the meters aren't filling up to your satisfaction.

This whole promotion was pretty weak money grab. Projected to unlock a whole two hours early. They should have made it people playing Portal 1 and the mods or something. Well, whatever.

Well it looks like it's going to launch much earlier than just 2 hrs since it was originally going to launch at 10AM PST on Tuesday and now looks like around 10PM PST tonight.

I'm waiting to get P2. I know it will be good, but valve is sale happy with their own titles, I can wait till near the end of the year or if the PS3 versions PC copy is just a code you punch into Steam, I might pick one up cheap like that

I already owned all but 3 games in the potato sack, good games, I hope people actually go back to enjoy them (doubtful) instead of just blasting through/following a guide for this stupid marketing stunt.

I plan to get Portal 2 once it's heavily discounted, but I already got two free games from people buying the potato pack and having leftover games and preordering Portal 2

PC Gamer review:

It makes us both a little sad that, having played through once, we can never look at these puzzles—in either single-player or co-op—with those same bewildered eyes again (barring, as Aperture would call it, “a very minor case of serious brain damage&#8221. The included developer commentary, and of course an encore performance from the cast, would be the only things that might make us start playing again after Jonathan Coulton’s new song, “Glad You’re Gone” (which is good, but “Still Alive” is a really tough act to follow) rolls with the credits.

For that reason, our strongest words of caution are to choose your co-op partner carefully. You only really get one shot at these puzzles—don’t waste them with someone who’s already been through, as that would spoil the many surprises and the victory of discovering them for yourself.

We’ll definitely remember all of Portal 2 fondly, though, and as one of the best-written and finely polished gaming experiences in recent memory.

The review has spoilers in it as most reviews do.

The original Portal benefitted from its brevity. It had a concise story paired with inventive first-person puzzle mechanics that challenged you to be creative while pulling the trigger. Portal 2 makes the original look like the prototype it was. It's filled with a larger cast of characters vividly brought to life through brilliant writing and some of the best voice acting in video games. Its puzzles are challenging without being unreasonable, and, once you're finished with the single-player mode, one of the best co-operative experiences on the market awaits. Valve cuts no corners and finds ways to make you care about everything from the major characters to the cubes used to solve puzzles. From the beginning of the single-player story to the end of the co-op mode, Portal 2 is a novel, unforgettable experience.

I guess we're going to have to get people to do Co-Op together in Portal 2 as this review says that its a whole different Co-Op storyline from singleplayer.

If anyone wants to do Co-Op, let me know.

I wonder if that means I can sell my PS3 copy. It says it's just a CD-Key in the box so I should be able to sell it.

Yeah you can, no reason you can't. I really thought they were going to tie the PSN account to the Steam account to unlock it for your PC, but the way they decided to do it, it is basically buy one get one free.
