I just thought of another question about this. Say I port my main number to GV and start using it for all texts and calls. If GV started to charge for domestic calls in the future, would I be charged GV credit for each call I make? Or not since I'm using my phone's minutes and not calling directly from the GV website?

Calling/txting from the app is the same as from the website. If google ever started charging, then yes we would have to pay. Until then, enjoy the free calls. Between my Obi unit and GV, I never spend minutes currently... I wouldn't exactly be "mad" if they ever removed it.... but I would be disappointed

There is, you call your GV number, then 2* then the number you want to call. Then your phone rings with your GV number and you pick it up and the number you dialed will be ringing. It's weird and time consuming but it works.
So if that's the case, couldn't you set 123456789,2* as a dialing prefix?

For those that use GV for calls already, how is the latency? I tried doing a call with it with my current GV number and I felt there was noticeably more latency than a standard cell to cell call. That could be a deal breaker if I want to port my number to it and use it for every call.

Every phone is different. I use gv with the groove IP app and I had to tinker with echo settings. Now its good as gold. I'm using a mytouch 4g on t mobile $30 a month 4g pre paid plan, 5gb of 4g data, unlimited text and 100 minutes. I've used almost 2gb in 24 days and I've talked well over 1,200 minutes, I use FB for all my texts too. It's a damn good app to have, sure its not perfect but it can potentially save you a lot of cash and that's what matters...

I use Google Voice as my primary number on a Droid X, and although placing a call through GV takes maybe a second longer, I haven't noticed any extra latency during the call.

GV has nothing to do with your actual cellular connection unless you are doing VOIP.

Sure it does...you are getting routed through another location. There are plenty of people online who have tested the latency this adds. The question is is it noticeable and does it need to be a factor in considering whether to use this.

That would be a big mistake.

Straight Talk GSM, AT&T network, $45 unlimited everything: http://straighttalksim.com

I am very interested in stuff like this and the cheap T-Mobile plan Bman123 mentioned (got a link to that, btw?). The question though is phone choice. If I want a high-end smartphone and have to buy it off-contract, spending $600-700, what kind of savings will that still work out to?

Okay, good to know.

Okay, I found that plan on their site. So that is an awesome deal, but GrooveIP would definitely have to work very well to cope with only 100 minutes. How does it work on regular 3G?

Considering phone prices...if a phone was $650 off-contract and $200 on-contract, that is a difference of $450 or $18.75/mo over 2 years. Add that to $30/mo for the plan and it's still a savings of at least $20/mo over a regular AT&T plan I guess.

It doesn't, unfortunately. GrooveIP only works well on a low latency, stable connection. I'm on the T-Mobile plan on a Galaxy Nexus (I know I'm going to eat crow for talking shit about it in another thread). GrooveIP really doesn't work well on the HSPA connection.

Still though, you're saving so much you can always buy more minutes. The Nexus is around $450 right now, so 250 more than you'd pay for a phone with a new contract. You're saving over $60 a month over a contract plan.

One thing I really like about the Nexus is that you can use it on T-Mobile or AT&T, so if one sucks in your area just switch.

Yes, but once the call is actually connected GV is out of the picture.

I ported over when they were still in beta going on a year or so ago now. No real issues other than delayed messages when it first started off. Don't seem to ever have those issues anymore. Only thing that sucks is no mms. Not that big of a deal but it doesn't even tell you someone tried sending one and the sender has no clue you didn't get it either.

Everyone I usually would text wth knows to use email for pics and plain text SMS.

Really? I didn't know that. How do you explain results such as this? I know it's a year old, but still relevant. I only tried one call and I thought the latency was apparent, but I'll need to give it a try a few more times.

Thanks, that's great to hear. If the latency is basically a non-issue then I think I am really sold on doing this.

Of course, the other concern I mentioned higher on the page is what if they start charging for domestic calls. What would you do in that scenario? Just deal with it, or port back out to a carrier again?
