Ports, torrents, and trojans, oh my!

Question. If i open ports on my firewall for torrents what is there to prevent crackers/worms/trojans/virii/etc from using those to get access? Yes, im mostly a n00b...

Nothing, but they would need to find/exploit a bug in your bittorrent tool to do any damage.

To put it a different way, an open port isn't exactly like an open door - you can't just walk through it and do whatever you like. For every open port, there's a program that listens on it and decides how to handle the communication. Your bittorrent client is listening on those ports, so security problems only arise if that program can somehow be fooled into doing something it shouldn't.

Yeah your pretty much safe until you start hearing about torrent hacking and such.

I have yet to hear of any viruses or trojans attacking a torrent port.. but I wouldn't put it past people in the future.
