OK, so I would like to plan which parts go in each slot for optimum cooling and flow. I will be running a AMD ATHLON XP 2600 /333, 7200rpm HDD, DVD ROM, 3.5", 2 case fans (1intake/1 exhaust), 350w psu

top 5.25" DVD ROM
middle 3 5.25" left open
bottom 5.25" HDD

top 3.5" 3.5"Floppy
bottom 3.5" empty

top front fan Zalman ZM-F1 80mm, intake
bottom open

top rear Zalman ZM-F1 80mm, exhaust
bottom open

CPU heatsink w/80mm fan (see details below)

does this look ok, how hot (or cool ) should I expect it to run? how loud?

More fans at lower speeds will be quieter and cool better. I would run four panaflo L1A's at 7V, or some Enermax adjsutables.

Yeah, I'd get as many panaflos as will fit in your case, make sure to have rounded cables, and you can use a fan controller to lower the noise if you'd like.

OK, I think I understand.
I think this will work well. Is this a good fan? (out of stock on the panaflo's): fan from svc:80 x 25 mm Vantec Stealth Fan (27CFM @ 21dBA)

I will get 4. If I understand correctly (newbie), I should run all 4 of these case fans directly off the PSU with 4 pin adapters. (I think these come with all the screws and adapters?)

I should run the cpu fan directly off the mother board.

Those will work, but panaflos are much quieter. If you want panaflos you can get them at All Electronics for $4.50 each. I got mine there. They ship fast.

Yes they come with a two pin connector that fits on mb headers. They don't have rpm monitoring. So its not exactly a standard 3 pin connector, but it works just fine. To connect it to a 4 pin molex from the power supply you need a three pin adapter, just like for any fan that comes with a 3 pin connector. But you have to shave the little guide off the connector for it to fit. That is easily done with a knife.

DO NOT GET THE VANTEC STEALTH FANS. THE FAN IS NOT 21dBA.

Panaflos at bgmicro were out of stock so I bought 5 Vantec Stealth for my Kingwin Case. They were LOUD!!!.
I complained to SVC that I bought the Vantec Stealth because they were rated at 21dBA and were advertised at that price.
They were very nasty at beginning but they took the fans back nevertheless because they knew that these Fans were making equal amount of noise as the 30dBA fans.

So Do not get VANTEC Stealth. VANTEC is also notorious for jacking up (down?) their specs.

oh, right, and put your HDD up a few 5 1/2" slots.... allow for a bit of breathing room underneath it, where the chips get pretty hot. the DVD drive's placement doesnt matter.

if anything, I would actually put the HDD in one of the internal 3.5" racks, because those can have fans blowing over them, which is better than stagnant air. (forced convection > convection)

How do I do that? Do I have to modify the case at all, or do I just use the 51/2" rack things in the slots
