Possible alternative to new pc speakers.

I have posted a few questions recently about needing new speakers for my pc. A thought just crossed my mind so I figured somebody out there has done something similar.
My brother just got himself a bookshelf style system. It's a panasonic and it's pretty nice. I haven't looked at it too closely yet but it has two rca (left, right) auxillary plugs on the back.
Could I buy something similar and use the rca's? Would it have to have a line out instead?
I need feedback. I'm getting ridicuously tired of these Radio Shack headphones.
This option would be better for me because it also gives me a radio as well as having a cd carousel instead of just one disc in at a time.
Thanks

EDIT: How come my rig stuff isn't clickable?

you need to enter the URL as a URL. that is:
1. copy the url into your clipboard (ctrl V)
2. type (l=sometext)http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.html?id=223 (/l) in your profile where the ( and ) are replaced with [ and ] respectively and sometext is any text. my "sometext" is buttass systems.

you need an stereo miniplug to RCA adapter. one end is a miniplug just like the plug your headphones have. the other end matches those RCA plugs from the back of that stereo (red is right, white is left). you will also need a stereo RCA cable (has 2 plugs on both ends for left and right).

if your sound card has a line out, and a speaker out, use the line out. for older soundcards, the speaker out is amplified which would be bad if you output to a "stereo" that amplifies its input. of course if you find the volume too low from the computer, use the speaker out.

now for the reverse of that: if you have a headphone connector on that stereo, you can have it output to your computer via a cable also. ;-)

Thanks for the lesson Mday. I guess I'll find out if I did it right soon enough.
As far as the sound card goes, it's the original sblive with the daughter board. So you suggest I do use the line out, right?

I'm a little unclear on the last statement you made about the headphone connector. Can you pass that by me one more time.
Thanks

i think Mday means that if you want your Stereo (cd player) to output to your computer speakers (if you were not outptuting the sound to the stereo)
then you can do this via connecting a cable from the mic jack on the stereo to the line in and to your speakers through the line out....i could be wrong, thats what i took from it.

Actually, the same type of cable will do it...

Assume stereo has two RCA audio in plugs, left and right.

Assume computer has one 1/8th inch line out.

Use a cable that has 1/8th" male end, and 2 RCA male ends.

You still use a cable that has 1/8th" male end, and 2 RCA male ends.

Thanks for the help everyone. So if I get the shelf system that has the center, rears, and two fronts hooked up to my sblive, will the sound from games, music, etc. come out of the rears also?
