Kindle Fire has ~6 hours real-world battery life, but no webcam or mic if you need those, and no SD card for using as a media player away from wifi on a trip.

I always considered it the dumbest thing about fire, even the cheapest $60 ebay tablet has an SD slot...

yeah again, for me its wifi, bluetooth, gps, usb port, front camera and sd slot are probably what i NEED... everything else is kinda whatever. well, a position sensor too since i do go from portrait to landscape quite a bit.

i suppose i just spec'd out a $250 tablet though

Possibly not @ 7"....

I have a 10" "ePad Flytouch 3" I got a while back, and it has a very responsive GPS, and came with an external antenna. I just need to get a special mount bracket made tot he tablet car mount I have (putting a 10" tablet on the window seems a bit insane).

The GPS is faster than any of the dedicated GPS units I've ever owned.

Having bought a no name cheap tablet from Ali before, no thanks. If you really want an inexpensive tablet, go with the Amazon Fire, or a Lenovo A1 both are $200 and you can get them within 2-3 days or even in some stores. When I ordered a tablet from Ali it took 3 weeks to show up. I forgot I ordered it.

not worried about the wait time, but the fact that the a1 has gps and i cant find any chinese tabs that do, i think you might be right.

hmm.. that sucks. because i have a transformer, and its gps is kick ass but, its a 10" tablet! its not nearly as portable as a 7".

i think the a1 might be in my near future. hopefully a new gen of lenovo tabs come out soon so i can find a used a1 for cheap

Maybe the Leveno offers real US-based support and quality construction but let's face it, it's performance with a single 1Ghz cortexA-8 and no graphics GPU won't be close to the Ramos..

I was figuring GPS would be in my phone, ditto camera. I guess time will sort out what goes in what device.

I keep thinking, wow the "next" generation will be what I want, maybe this year it will be true as maybe featuritis slows down and low power gets more trendy.

Bluetooth is a life saver. In addition to all else mentioned, I am tethering to phone via it. Which makes tablet useful where you have no internet connection.

I've been doing all of my phone tethering via WiFi lately, so for me BT is a take it or leave it feature. It is nice to have, but it is by no means a deal breaker if it isn't there.

ugh... i just dont know what to do then. i bought my transformer for $250, so i certainly dont want to spend close to that on a 7" that i will likely be using even less.

i thought i would be using the transformer more then i do... its too big much of the time though. i want to use it as an htpc remote and portable gps device but thats not working out. just too big for that.

ill tell you what though, it absolutely destroys anything else i have when used as a party toy. its the perfect wall flower killer... anyone thats not quite fitting in or just a little on the 'blah' mood side picks this thing up and gets fully entertained for hours. and i throw the hdmi cable on it so other people can watch it on the tv and its just a smash. everyones first reaction is like "oh god, a stupid ipad" but minutes later i hear "this thing is fucking awesome" and everyone is asking for their turn.

but i still want a 7". htpc remote, gps device and music player (so i dont have to mess with whatever my htpc is doing at the time, normally a game or just winamp visualization but its a pain to minimize the screen just to change music). im fuckin determined to find a ~$150 7" tablet that has gps now!

Yea it's odd since the "7 form factor seems like it would work well with a GPS function but I've never seen one in a low cost tab either..

bingo!

hyundai too! which is not known for being a top tier brand in computing, but at least its recognizable. steep price for a "cheap" tablet, but the specs are there and i dont think ive seen a better value yet. i might try this one!

I got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 from Macmall on eBay for $219 shipped.

It's pretty nice. A lot of people complain about performance/choppiness, but once you get Nova Launcher on there it is super smooth.

i'd just suck it up and get a used ipad 1 jailbroken for $150 used.

While i love my htc flyer and galaxy tab. it's way slower at wifi pickup and the quality of apps suck for tablets big time. big big time compared to apple.

Plus having to run antivirus on android makes me want to puke.

For those of you who have experience with tablets with a GPS, are there any good free GPS navigation programs?

Just curious, because I thought for Google Maps, you have to pre-load your route over Wi-fi for your planned trip.

ok, i finally made a decision.

a motorola droid X for $67 used good condition on ebay

this is perfect for me. cheap, portable, can be htpc remote, gps device, nice dock station they make for it so i can sit it on the table... not to mention a kick ass camera. i can also use skype properly just like a regular phone. its what i needed anyway. i think this and my 10" tablet will make great mates. they can share all my paid apps too!

google nav. need cell connection for it to work though.

look into co-pilot 8 live. it stores maps locally so you can use it without data connection, and its only $24. excellent value

Google maps has a feature to let you pre-cache maps. In Maps settings go to Labs >> Pre-cache Map area.
