A little background, I've been with my current company for almost 11 years. For various reasons, I might have to look for another job. I currently run the test department for an access control manufacturer.
I've always been tech savvy, love working with computers, so thought a sys or net admin type job would be a great fit. Like any other geek, I've built many many PC's (mostly gaming rigs), setup wireless networks, and do all the tech support for friends/family, etc.
I'm an unofficial desktop support person at my company, but lack a lot of the server side experience. I started my MSCE years ago, but an accident cut that short and I never returned to school. I passed the first 2 or 3 tests, can't remember exactly.
Most job postings I've browsed list the following experience requirements:
2000/2003 Server
Active Directory
Exchange 5.5/200/2003
SQL
And some want scripting experience, Cisco/Juniper router installation and setup, VPN, VLAN, Citrix, web server, DNS, SSH...
With no specific studying, I've taken some of MS TechNET practice tests and get around 50% right.
So, ultimately, the advice I need is what is the best way to acquire the above skills? Self study books? Classes? A place like Heald? Which courses would blend the best skills for a net/sys admin type position?
Thanks in advance,
Trey
