Finally got it. Unfortunately I had to drive way across town to the store that rhowcow2 got it at. Weird, but all the other inCOMPetentUSAs said that it was $279, but that 1 said $199. Strange.

I was able to snag one for $199 + tax. The drive scanned at this price - no effort on my behalf. Also, as indicated above, the rebate is also marked as $50 off for this drive.

For Northern Virginians and others from the D.C. area, I found my drive at the CompUSA in Fair Lakes (Fairfax). When they took the one off the shelf for me @ 5:30 this afternoon, there were still 3 left right behind it.

Bubba, I'm glad this worked out for you. Too bad you had to go through the mess at the other stores. I would imagine that those stores had managers who changed the price back to $279 in the register just because they are a$$holes. A little consideration to customers goes a long way. If you want customers to return for purchases at a later date, then you treat them right.

According to their website, the hardware requirement is "Pentium® PC running 233 MHz or faster", among other things.

Damn... I just got back from a long trek. Downtown Chicago is only 9 minutes according to mapquest but actually getting a parking space on Sunday (when meters are free) is freaking impossible. Finally got one about a mile or two from the store only to find out that I had the hours wrong - they closed at 6pm not 7pm. I think the website says 7pm but I didn't check yet.

Dang it! I'm going to try to go downtown tomorrow. It kinda sucks - the CompUSAs in Chicago are either downtown (1) or out in the burbs (4 or so). None are in a nice easy place to get to. Ah well, deal is a deal, hehe... Plus I'll get a chance to pick up MS Streets & Trips for $24.99 - $20 rebate and a bunch of those $9.99 4x CD-RW packs (gotta go burbia if I want those though).

Thanks for posting the deal. I hope I get it tomorrow!

Is the ad from this Sunday? Would they have a copy at the store if I went there tomorrow?

Wait a sec...

From the sony site: Sony 12x site
it says that this can only handle 650 MB CDRs. Is this true?

Will this CDRW burn 80 min CDRs or not???

Does anyone know of a site that lists CDRWs that are capable of 80min burns?

Can someone please answer if this drive can burn 80min CDRs? I will probably return it if it can't.

Bubba. I just used my 12x to burn an 80min PNY. No problem at all with the Extreme Cd software that came with the unit. Adaptec EasyCD Creator does not recognize the 12x Sony. Hopefully Adaptec will come out with an update.

Thanks! I have one more question...

Was that a full 700 MB? (80 min?) I have been searching and some sites say that it only burns 78.5 minutes, which would make it under 700 MB (i.e. it would burn only about 687MB). I guess I worry that the last 13 MB would be hosed. I have had CDRs that report they wrote more data than they actually did. Did you check the data?

BTW, thanks for the deal!

Sku# maybe the prices don't reflect all the COMPUSA's i know its usually by region.
I paid 199. It scanned without a problem. If you have the FLYER take the flyer with you.

EMAIL ME for copy of my Receipt

I have a copy of my receipt online i will send you the LINK so you can take it to COMPUSA and show it to them.

PLEASE DON'T MISUSES the receipt.

Enjoy & Goodluck

Like I said, 2 places even scanned at $279. I argued with the ad, but they wouldn't give it to me. The 3rd place scanned at $199 though.

So, did either of you guys check to make sure that you got all 700 MB?

The Customer service guy said that the price was incorrect, but the manager, Tony Lehr said that they HAD to give me the 199.00 And this was for the 12x. They have plenty at the Anaheim store in So California. They also have an abundance of those 45 gig drives. got me those too. Due to the corporate discount, i got the drive for 154 -90 = 64 dollars. They had plenty of those. BTW those are WD hard drives, with full 3 year warranty.

Good luck to ya'll.

Also regarding the req for the rebates, one asks for the size sticker while the other asks for the UPC code. Both include clear examples of each. So no problem there.

Anyoen else having any problem witht his drive? I went and got one for 199-50 in Memphis but it refuses to burn cue/bin files. Annoying as I can't figure it out. It burned an 80min iso though.

Bubba. I burned a music CD with a full 80 min without a problem. I then burned close to 700MB data disc with DirectCD without a hitch. This drive definitely has no problems burning more than the 640mb 74min.

I work at Comp and the 12X in my store are going for $199 because the 10X (of which we had 2 to start the day) sold out. Corporate has told the stores that the 12X is a replacement when the 10X sells out and the stores will only be reimbursed if zero 10X are shown in stock. If a store has the 10X in stock then they won't wanna sell the 12X at that price.

<< These drives do not support burnproof..but has a 4mg buffer to avoid buffer underruns >>

do you realize 12x is nearly 2 megs/sec?? That 4 meg buffer would be gone in 2 seconds!!

Sorry, but any IDE drive above 6x without burnproof is tooo risky (with SCSI any speed is ok )

This is a generic question, but is a drive rated at 12X CDR speed able to achieve that with a music CD, or is that only for data? Also, do you dub straight from a CD-ROM drive, or copy to HD and then dub? And are there any readers that could dub 12X audio on the fly without a hiccup (beyond the Kenwood TrueX drives)?

To anyone who got this deal, have any of you been able to get it to work with CDR-WIN or FireBurner? It keeps saying can't set speed and rejects the cue sheet.... weird since it happened in more than one program..
